What are Norms? Norms are the rules in which you behave and is expected of you in a society, group or culture. They can be contested. We have norms that provide us with guidelines on how to act in society, without them we would have no order. Norms can be very different across the world, they can be different between cultures, generations, ethnicity, race and gender. They can also be represented through many things not just actions. They could be expressed through symbols, events and ceremonies. In our generation what we see as a norm is very different to our grandparents generation. A good example of this is dating. If you were to violate a mores you could also be committing a crime and breaking the law. Some examples of mores that are against the law is stealing, rape and drugs. There are some mores that are not against the law but if committed you will be met with a lot of grief. An example of how norms and mores differ from countries and cultures is drugs. Here in Canada and most places marijuana is illegal, and seen as a mores, but down in Colorado it is legal. No one would know right from wrong and the world would be a very dangerous and scary place. Even though the norms differ from culture to culture, each one has their specific rules that everyone should follow, or should follow. Norms give this world a direction in where it should be and where were heading. Imagine if we lived in a society where you could commit crime with no consequences. No one would be doing good deeds, because they would be getting no rewards, and everyone would be double dipping their chips. That does not sound like a very fun or safe place to be
