Did you have influences from other people to tell you to wear a head scarf?
Out of the four interviewees, one of them was influenced by her parents and friends in a positive way to wear a head covering. Out of the other three girls who say they were not influenced and was their decision to wear a head scarf, the one studying Economics said her Mom was initially upset with her decision. This was because most of the South Asian society pressures girls to look their best. But after seeing her happy with her decision to wear a headscarf, her Mom was proud of her. Her father encouraged her to wear a head scarf as well, but never forced.
Sanaa said that Islamic school helped her place head scarf into practice at a young age since this was part of the uniform. But she didn’t know that it was mandatory until middle school. Her mother, who came from India didn’t know this as well, and have never informed her about this. When her father learned that this was required form of dress for Muslim women, he would encourage her to wear hijab, but never did force her to do so.
Do you regret your decision to wear the hijab? Explain.
Out of the four girls, the one studying business said that she regretted her decision of wearing the hijab, and she doesn’t regret taking the hijab now. She further said, that she will wear the headscarf again sometimes in the future, when she is ready to do so. She wants to improve herself before wearing the headscarf, because it should be an honor for a female to be wearing a headscarf.
The Muslim woman studying economics says that she doesn’t at all regret her decision. People show off their body, but wants to protect her privacy and highlight on her brain by serving the community professionally and publicly.

However, in a positive perspective they feel that people recognize them as a person with integrity. They noticed that men don’t look at them for their beauty, but more so for their brain. Furthermore, they feel more spiritual when wearing the headscarf. Many of them mentioned that they are keener to understand their religion, Islam, and also respond against Islamophobia. They view themselves as an icon to Islam, because people know they are Muslim right away due to their headscarf. In respond to their right to “life, liberty and pursuit of happiness” they have all this in perhaps a different outlook to Western’s view of what it may be. They find happiness in following their faith, and still continue their daily living.
