Many years ago there was a small boy who was woken by a loud scream. Terrified, he ran from his room to find his mother unconscious on the floor. His little sister was screaming as he pulled his mom onto her back in desperation. In reality, he didn’t know what to do to save her and his helplessness was due to his lack of knowledge. She passed away that night. That boy was me. Our past defines us no matter how we protest; it can either pull you down into failure or lift you up towards success. From then on, I was drawn to medical sciences and used that helplessness to motivate my education. The most important choice I have made was deciding to enlist into the United States Navy. During that training, I learned about the physician assistant profession from a very talented Navy officer. Observing and talking with him, he educated me on what a Physician Assistant can do. I learned about how vital his role is in patient care and how the Physician Assistant is cross-trained in many fields similar to Corpsmen. The first students enrolled in a PA program were hospital corpsmen from the Navy in 1965. Leadership, accountability, teamwork and excellence are just a few of the many qualities instilled in each and every Sailor who joins the Navy. These characteristics promote unity among your shipmates, working together and keeping each other accountable so no one finds themselves in a position where they feel helpless. These are qualities found in the Physician Assistant values, making a Corpsman-to-Physician Assistant transition appealing. My past shows that even in the presence of a tragic event, one can still turn those events into inspiration. Joining the Navy has introduced me to medicine and the Physician Assistant profession. In the beginning of fall of 2016, I got a job as a medical assistant. It’s long process to get this sort of job, at least with the University of Utah so when I finally went through the orientation, lab training, computer training, and community clinics I got to work and realized there was, even more, training. Every clinic has its personal preferences and rules, so I had to start from scratch with the training I already had. As soon as I got therenoticeI was a given a quick tour of the clinic and given all the rules, passwords and regulations. It was already too much to handle, but I was memorizing as much as I could. I can’t always function under pressure, but I tried not to let my nerves get to me.

Although I grew up in a military family, I never saw myself going into a military career. Up until I was about fourteen years old, I planned on being a marine biologist in Hawaii. Sounds nice, right? Well, at the end of my eighth grade year I decided that I might as well join NJROTC, because all of my friends were doing it and it seemed okay. I have to say, looking back, I was quite naive. Joining NJROTC was the smartest and most valuable decision I have made to this day.
The physician assistant is a team player in the medical world, working daily with surgeons, physicians, therapists, and many other health care professionals. I believe that people everywhere should always have access to adequate medical care. Where you live should not determine whether you live, and the PA profession was created to improve the availability of healthcare in rural and other underserved areas. I want to serve those that need medical attention but don’t have the means to obtain it—whether in rural Michigan, the inner-city of Atlanta, or the backwoods of Arkansas. After review of my skills, interests, and experiences, I decided to pursue the medical career field as my first career choice, more specifically as a physician assistant. I will exceed in this position in the interest of that I like to help people and I solve problems well. Also, I communicate well with others and I have a great amount of patience. There are various careers that fit my skills and interests, but this one grabs my attention. My dream job is to be a doctor, but this occupation allows one to save money by lessening the years of school required. Also, the pay isn’t too shabby either. I will be successful in this position due to my skills, characteristics, and values, like honesty and helping others. Any job in the medical field is great, because it will always be needed no matter what. The purpose of conducting this interview was to gain insight on opportunities that the Navy provides to the nurses who serve. It was also an opportunity to discover the differences between civilian nurses and nurses who serve in the military. Overall, the main goal was to assess the work environment as well as the various opportunities a nurse has to grow his/her career and establish his/her personal identity, with a focus on a military career. This interview relates to the visual representation of the career trajectory project, as the main goal was to establish a career in the military, and later seek further education as a D.N.P. The interview addressed both aspects and provided insight on how to develop one’s career identity through the military and eventually seek education through military programs. The interview also addressed retirement at a young age, which was also a goal of the visual representation.
At the end of volunteer services I have decided on a major, I am now striving to become a physician’s assistant. In this position, not only do I get to care for patients, but I am presented with the opportunity to change their lives. I will be able to see firsthand the diversity of cultures from around the world.
