Many years ago there was a small boy who was woken by a loud scream. Terrified, he ran from his room to find his mother unconscious on the floor. His little sister was screaming as he pulled his mom onto her back in desperation. In reality, he didn’t know what to do to save her and his helplessness was due to his lack of knowledge. She passed away that night. That boy was me. Our past defines us no matter how we protest; it can either pull you down into failure or lift you up towards success. From then on, I was drawn to medical sciences and used that helplessness to motivate my education. The most important choice I have made was deciding to enlist into the United States Navy. During that training, I learned about the physician assistant profession from a very talented Navy officer. Observing and talking with him, he educated me on what a Physician Assistant can do. I learned about how vital his role is in patient care and how the Physician Assistant is cross-trained in many fields similar to Corpsmen. The first students enrolled in a PA program were hospital corpsmen from the Navy in 1965. Leadership, accountability, teamwork and excellence are just a few of the many qualities instilled in each and every Sailor who joins the Navy. These characteristics promote unity among your shipmates, working together and keeping each other accountable so no one finds themselves in a position where they feel helpless. These are qualities found in the Physician Assistant values, making a Corpsman-to-Physician Assistant transition appealing. My past shows that even in the presence of a tragic event, one can still turn those events into inspiration. Joining the Navy has introduced me to medicine and the Physician Assistant profession. Deciding to join the USN has allowed me to gain the tools and knowledge to go after that dream career. The opportunity to become a PA would be the final step in my pursuit of
