Author’s Note
We are frequently told, by the market and also by the writers who are allies with the market, to respect certain forms of writing over other forms. The publishing industry emphasizes profits, which means novels sell better than collections of short stories. This makes a certain pressure on fiction writers; often we start out writing short stories, on our own or in creative writing workshops, but we soon feel we have an obligation to “graduate” to the novel. The short story is less respected, nothing more than a stepping stone. Yet there is no best form of writing – only the form that suits us best.

His stories get a rise out of people. He promotes angst in every work he has written. His stories force the reader to read between the lines, whether the reader wanted to or not. One of my favorite descriptions that Hemingway wrote leaves the reader feeling nervous and curious at the same time: “Inside the kitchen he saw Al, his derby hat tipped back, sitting on a stool beside the wicket with the muzzle of a sawed-off shotgun resting on the ledge. Nick and the cook were back to back in the corner, a towel tied in each of their mouths. George had cooked the sandwich, wrapped it up in oiled paper, put it in a bag, brought it in, and the man had paid for it and gone out” (Hemingway, “The Killers”).

To get started, write one true sentence. Then, go on from there.
Always stop for the day while you still know what will happen next. To make steady progress, Hemingway made sure he never emptied the well of his imagination.
Never think about the story when you are not working. You will always want to write more when you do not think about it.
When it is time to work again, always start by reading what you have written so far. It maintains continuity. As you are reading over, correct as you go
