Hemingway’s Role in Detail to Make His Writing Seem Natural. In Ernest Hemingway’s writings “Indian Camp” and “The Killers,” Hemingway uses symbolism to relate the story, so the reader gets a true sense about the story. How Hemingway does this is by relating a personal experience, then altering it with symbolism and detail to make his writings feel natural to the reader. Also, Hemingway’s writings “Indian Camp” and “The Killers” have emotional factors that connects with the use of detailed violent scenes. In this story Hemingway describes how Ole Anderson is the target for two killers who are after him. However, when Ole is warned by a friend that Ole is trying to get murdered, Ole acts as he already knew about the plan for murder. Even though this story is not about either Ole or “The Killers,” and is in fact about letting the reader know not to accept killing, and to fight back in those circumstances. Furthermore, Hemingway’s use of factual detail in “The Killers” can most nearly be seen when Hemingway describes what they do in the café while getting ready for the “big dinner” (216) as Al’s friend called the dinner. For example, when Hemingway uses detail to describe the “big dinner” (216), that Ole came and eat every night like as Al’s friend describes the “Big dinner” as “Ham and eggs, bacon and eggs, liver and bacon, or a steak.” (215). Because, Hemingway chose to describe the list of foods in that manner, gives the impression that Hemingway makes this as factual as possible so the reader can get the sensation that makes Hemingway’s “The Killers” as realistic to true life as possible. Additionally, the criticism on Hemingway’s “The Killers,” by Martin, Quentin describes “The Killers” using a descriptive story to express the factual detail that is Hemingway trying to explain how nothing is certain in life. However, Hemingway does this by using factual symbolism to describe how nothing is in stone until the real situation arises. For example, in the criticism by Martin, Quentin, Nick and the woman says, “Well, good-night. Mrs. Hirsch,” Nick said. “I’m not Mrs. Hirsch,” the women said “she owns the place. I just look after it for her. I’m Mrs. Bell” (56).
