People’s theories on erasing American History

Alot of people believe some Americans are trying to erase history. There has been riots, fights and even people killed during all of this. Some people have said that they think it’s an attempt to wipe out any pride Southerners have in their heritage. In their eyes, everything about the American past is bad and shameful and must be driven into the dirt. A lot of people these days believe that America is living in the past.

They are trying to erase history, whether it be removing statues or rioting in the streets. There are a lot of people involved in what’s happening, and a lot of people against erasing history. In some states people were hurt during the riots. The people say that the goal …show more content…

David Barton once said 1“I would be surprised if the people cheering on the statues being taken down even knew the history of their own party.” Some say it’s an attempt to wipe out any pride South1erners should have in their heritage. We no longer look at heroes as people or as complex individuals; rather we now judge them solely by one issue, whatever that issue happens to be at the time. We are creating a culture where we believe we have a right not to be offended or even have our misconceptions challenged.

What offends us now is so routinely redefined that probably no statue now will survive more than a generation before it becomes offensive to someone who will demand its removal. The current battle actually goes back to a mass shooting in 2015, when self-described white supremacist Dylann Roof shot and killed nine people in a predominantly black church in Charleston, South Carolina. Roof drew a lot of attention for posing with the Confederate flag in images that came out after the shooting — and that helped spur a fight within South Carolina about whether it should take down a Confederate flag that had flown at the state capitol for years. Of course, many people disagree that this is about erasing white history. They argue that these monuments were built originally to honor the Confederacy and the racism and white supremacy that it stood

On the other hand Steven Hahn argues that former slaves and confederates were willing and prepared to fight for what they believed in “reflecting a long tradition of southern violence that had previously undergirded slavery” Hahn also believes that reconstruction ended when the North grew tired of the 16 year freedom conflict. Although many people are unsure, Hahn’s arguments presents a more favorable appeal from support from his argument oppose to Blight. The inevitable end of reconstruction was the North pulling federal troops from the south allowing white rule to reign again and proving time travel exist as freed Africans in the south again had their civil, political, and economical position oppressed.
