In this society, the major educational branches that receive the most attention is, the majors that Involve – Math, Science, Technology and engineering, also better recognized as STEM. It is difficult to find a job involving the arts because those jobs are limited and it’s also hard to find an occupation with a good salary. A good handful of college attendees are majoring in either in a science, or in technology. We have transferred into an era where technology has become prime and science has always been important but in this generation, there more discoveries and questions about the world around us, and many people focus on those branches of education because they have a great impact on society going forward.
What Yo-Yo Ma essay is trying elaborate on is that he believes we to fight for the arts and how it should integrate into the mixture, and that the arts are also a very important factor and there should be a balance between science, technology, engineering, math, and the arts. – an “Equilibrium” (YO-YO MA, Yo-Yo Ma, page 259). A substantial part of the enjoyment that will come from pursuing a STEM degree is knowing it is something that I have always wanted to do since I was a young girl. When I was about 10 years old, I started to watch the Discovery Channel on television. These shows captured my attention and my love for science, and ultimately led me to want to pursue a career in the science field. Then, when I was a freshman in high school, I realized my true love of science from honors Biology and being introduced to the microscope. Now, three years later as a senior in high school, I am continuing my love of science by taking AP Biology. Throughout my life, my experiences have only strengthened my love and enjoyment in this field.
A college education gives a person the opportunity to be successful in life, either financially or morally dependent on the goals that they set for their life. They will choose a college that offer programs for the major of their choice, where they will specialize and receive a degree. The decision to pursue a higher education will give the opportunity to earn a better income over someone who does not have a degree. College is more of life preparation course that will help make sure a successful career. If a person pursues a career in engineering, physics or mathematics their curriculum would include more liberal art preparation courses, in order for them to earn their degree, so someone pursuing a degree in these types of careers are attending college for job preparation. When young girls are disinterested in science, or when young women don’t pursue science majors in college, this has an overall impact that in a way is a disservice to society. Girls aren’t rejecting science and careers in science because it’s too difficult. Rather, there are other reasons at play, most of which have kept women from pursing careers in science, technology, engineering and math and subsequently creating a gender gap in STEM. Young girls, and women, experience teacher bias in the classroom, a chilly climate from male colleagues as they progress through their careers, little societal support for wanting a career and a family, lacking role models in their study of interest, and an overall lack of science preparation when it comes to pursuing a STEM career. All of these factors contribute to gender inequalities that are keeping women out of the STEM field and encouraging them to pursue other career alternatives.
Jane Alexander, Chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), once said, “Many children are missing out on something which gives their education context, gives their lives depth and meaning, and prepares them to be the future workforce.” This “something” that she spoke of is music and art education. Unfortunately, she is entirely correct. We are currently seeing in our country a dramatic cut in arts education curriculum in our public schools due to the limited amount of both time and funding. In many cases budget cutbacks mean arts education cutbacks. This limited amount of resources often forces administrators to place a value on the various subject areas. There is always a demand for greater concentration upon the traditional basics: English, math, science, and history. There is also a new focus on computer competency and a renewed focus on the need for foreign language education. Add to this health education, family life education, industrial arts education, AIDS education, home economics, physical education, and business education and one begins to wonder where arts education fits in.

When students get a “F” on their exam, that does not necessary means they are stupid, or they do not know the material.
