Equality
In the 1964 in the South, racism was a huge issue for people. The civil right act of 1964 allowed the right to vote, confer jurisdiction upon the district courts of the United States of America, public education, injunctive relief against discrimination and use of public facilities. The South had a struggle accepting the equality. The southern whites felt like they needed to maintain dominance over black people. They decided to humiliate African Americans with words and physical abuse. In the novel, The Secret Life of Bees the author Sue Monk Kidd archives to portray racism with the protagonist, Lily Owens. He demonstrates Lily’s life engaging racism and her own priorities towards the African American.
At the beginning of the novel, Lily accompanies Rosaleen into town where she plans to register to vote. Instead, a group of white males verbally Harass Rosaleen for being black. she gets arrested for confronting the group of white males. Rosaleen gets hit for refusing to apologize to the white male, “That was when the dealer lifted the flashlight over his head then down, smashing it into Rosaleen’s forehead. One day I went to Starbucks to get a drink for my aunt. While I was in line the man behind said, "You should go back to your own country where you belong." I corrected him by telling him this was my birth country, yet he continued to perter me by saying "You didn’t deserve to be born here." Argument broke out between bystanders; however, I decided to rise above his expectations of me by staying calm and not being rude. I kept my head high showing I was proud of who I am just like Rosaleen did when she was getting discriminated. Both Rosaleen and I have reliable experiences with verbal harassment because of our skin color. The only difference was that I wasn’t physically attacked in any way like
