There are many people around the world who struggle with seizure; an estimated 3 million in the United States and 65 million people worldwide. Seizure is an attack that occurs in the brain when the electrical activity is abnormal. It can be a very scary situation because most of the patients don’t see it coming. It’s possible for it to occur at any place and at any time and the only thing to do is to hope that it doesn’t happen while the person is driving or in the shower or simply being alone at home. It’s not easy for the family and friends that have to watch and go through the process of seeing someone having a seizure, it’s not a pretty scene and it can affect the people around greatly. One out of 26 Americans will be diagnosed with epilepsy in their lifetime and each year about 50,000 people die from this neurological disorder. There are about three types of seizures, generalized onset seizures, focal onset seizures and unknown onset seizures. The symptoms include jerky movements, muscle spasm but if the person is having a silent seizure, there are no jerky movements and the person might not be conscious or alert for a short time after a seizure occurs, the body can be sore for days and the person might experience severe headaches. Some patients do feel different before a seizure happens which makes it easier for them to find a safe place such as laying on the bed or the ground. In that case the only thing they can do is to keep away from hard and sharp objects. Seizure is a hard disorder to diagnose because it rarely happens at the doctor’s office so it really depends on what the person who has witnessed it says. Some common medications that are prescribed are Carbamazepine, Carbatrol, Tegretol, Epitol, Equetro and valproate. Most of these medications can have up to 50 side effects but it’s definitely worth taking it because for a lot of people it reduces the number of predicted or expected seizures and some people might not even experience any seizures, especially when the two seizure medication are used together. There are data that compares the effectiveness and difference between carbamazepine and valproate monotherapy. In a study, there were 1,265 patients from a meta-analysis of five trials. nearly 570 of them were males. The results show that there is strong evidence between type of seizure and the type of treatment. The medication valproate “delayed the first seizure after treatment 58%, 52%, 44%, and 36% longer than CBZ for individuals aged 10, 20, 30, or 40, respectively. “were over 30 years old CBZ worked better compare to VPS.
