Being a Christian is difficult and confusing in today’s world.It can be hard to decipher what is right from what is wrong given our world’s skewed sense of morality. The book of Ephesians gives the core principles of theology for being proper imitators of Christ. In Ephesians 5:6-20 it gives the basic rules for living as children of light. In order to understand this passage clearly, the history behind the author of the text and people receiving it will be analyzed along with each verse of the text. An application of the passage to our lives will also be given to further uncover the meaning of the passage. Pseudonymity, according to Patzia (1995), means that something may have been written: “in the name of someone else” (pg. 122) for example, Ephesians written in the name of Paul, to communicate a message with the authority of Paul. Many scholars may view this style of writing as plagiarism and claim that these authors are out to deceive the audience. In contrast, this may have given these authors the “stamp of apostolic authority”(pg. 123) especially in a time where the church may have been threatened by false teaching (Patzia, 1995). Deutero- Paulinists could not have only been copiers or Pauline fanatics, but they could have also been theologians themselves. They could have written with the intention not to plagiarize Paul's ideas but to summarize his important point or to expand on them. Other points such as the difference in vocabulary and style of writing have been used to dissuade Pauline authorship. Paulinists rebut by asserting the skillful nature of Paul as a writer and
