Ever since Human Civilization has existed there has been a universal word for caring, Empathy. Empathy historically has many different interpretations within specific genders, races, and regionally throughout the world. Within this paper I will show my take on what Empathy is which I have curated through the reading of a book, Empathy: Why It Matters, and How to Get It. I will take his arguments and apply it to our everyday lives to show examples of how we use Empathy. In effect, establishing a working idea of what it is, why it’s important, and examples of where it is used

When we begin to focus on those around us instead of simply focusing on ourselves. Where instead of blaming others first, we figure out if there is something we did wrong and what we as a society could do to correct it. Where instead of ignoring the world we live in, we take time out to hear another person's story. Where instead of giving someone who is homeless money, we take them to a restaurant and hear their story. Essentially, outspection is figuring out not what the world can do for you, but what you can do for the world. The author states, “Social networks may be good at spreading information, but not adept at spreading empathy.” There is a difference and we are capable of using Empathy, however on Social Media there is distance. Distance makes Empathy very difficult to feel. It is easy to sit behind a screen and not have to see/hear the pain you cause someone. It is easy to post the best moments of your life and ignore the rough moments. So in the age we live in, is it possible to heal?

Yes, hated can turn into love. We see movements like Black Lives Matter spread awareness and Native American Tribes standing up protecting what is theirs. We see movements across the nation which are helping people empathize with them. An important part of Empathy is to understand you do not have to be in the same situation, what you need to do is work to the best of your ability to understand and to actively
