In this paper I am going to be talking about social and emotional development in my niece Loren. Social Development involves learning the values, knowledge and skills that enable children to relate to others effectively and to contribute in positive ways to family, school and the community (https://www.kidsmatter.edu.au/families/about-friendship/social-development/social-development-children’s-social-development). I will also be talking about her emotional development. Emotional development is the emergence of a child 's experience, expression, understanding, and regulation of emotions from birth through late adolescence. It also comprises how growth and changes in these processes concerning emotions occur (http://www.education.com/reference/article/emotional-development/). Loren is a five year old, Caucasian little girl. She lives with her parents in a rural part of Ohio. Her dad works at a construction company and her mom is a hair stylist and stay at home mom. Her mom stays home Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday and she works Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. She has two brothers, an older brother Trent and a younger brother Troy. Loren is very active. She has dance class twice a week and she does gymnastics. I went and watched her ballet class. In the class, one of her friends kept telling the teacher that she couldn’t do the dance. Loren then told the little girl that she could do it. She said, “I know you can do it, because I can do it.” The dance teacher had Loren do the dance in front of the class alone, and then has the little girl join her in the dance. Loren didn’t say that in a way to show of, she said it in an empathetic way. Loren is able to identify her different emotions and she’s able to notice them in
Subject N told me this story about how she was chosen for student of the month and couldn’t express how she was feeling because she was feeling more than one emotion. She realized that, she said she felt “excited and nervous” because they needed to interview her to display it in the hallway. She is showing an understanding that more than one emotion can be experienced. During my second time observing her she was also sad because her friends cat died a week ago, showing she is aware of events that lead to emotional reactions (Denhman, Bassett, & Wyatt, 2007; Denham & others, 2012; Kuebli, 1994; Thompson, 2013c, d).
There are few fields within the child development science. One of them is represented by the psychoanalytical theory, which looks at the child emotional development within the context of social interaction and early attachments. This framework is called psychosocial as it looks on the emotional and social aspects. Running in parallel and influencing each other there are two more main areas, cognitive and physical. Although I am focusing on the aspects of the psychosocial development, it is important to remember that all these areas are being affected one by the other, where the development of the emotional skills plays central role in a regular development of cognitive and physical skills.
A child’s development and learning commences from the earliest days of their lives. The unique identity of each individual stems from the relationships with people who provide love, care and emotional support. These relationships can be within the home environment, school playground or with extended family members and friends. Children respond to stimuli which in turn form the ‘internal working model’ (K101, Unit 5). Anne is a 22-year-old Caucasian female currently enrolled in college. She is enrolled as a full time student majoring in Criminal Justice. The three main stages of childhood development are early childhood, middle childhood and adolescence. Each stage contains developmental behaviors and characteristics of different age groups. The ideas of this article intrigued me because of the information presented in the beginning paragraphs. This article elaborates upon how important the ability of being able to distinguish between positive and negative emotions is. Through the faces presented in the start of the article, I learned that affective development “generally precedes cognitive and behavioral development, as children experience emotions and react to them long before they are able to verbalize or cope. However, social and emotional competencies do not unfold automatically; rather they are strongly influenced by the child’s early learning environment” (Kramer, Caldarella, Christensen & Shatzer 2010). This paper defined Emotional Quotient (EQ) and Emotional Intelligence (EI) and differentiated between the two terms often used interchangeably in papers to be synonymous for emotional intelligence. Businesses benefited greatly when employees utilized soft skills such as emotional intelligence, displayed a positive disposition and were able to work in healthier, more productive work environments. These competences were developed through self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and social-relationship management. The four elements were described in the Competency Based model by Daniel Goleman and Richard Boyatzis. Not all employees exhibited the same level or maturity of emotional Intelligence. Identification, development and implementation of the EQ skill set were required of employees for increased productivity and overall benefits for the organization such as harmony in the work environment with increased productivity and better team work because of the improved problem solving abilities developed from EI.
It discusses how children are born with that needs to connect with individuals around them. Teachers and providers create positive relationship with children from birth through the early years. The importance of supporting children and developing social skills is critical for learning, happiness, and long-term. This development begins during infancy and can be supported through simple social games, emotional role model, and imitating an infant's facial expression and sounds. The importance of social-emotional development and toddlers makes an impact in a child life when these skills are developed starting in infancy. Encouraging positive behaviors and using positive discipline practices that helped to develop the ability to make good choices as well as recognizing the confidence that is built when these behaviors are repeated. Early childhood reveals a distinctive opportunity for the foundation of a healthy development and a time of immense growth and of helplessness. In early childhood, children begin to learn what causes emotions and begin noticing others reactions to these feelings. They begin to learn to manage and control their feelings in self regulation. Emotional self regulation refers to the strategies used to adjust emotions to a contented level so goals can be accomplished. This requires voluntary, effortless management of emotions (Berk, 2007). Social and emotional learning is defined by Zins, Bloodworth, Weissberg and Walberg (2004, p. 4) as ‘the process through which we learn to recognize and manage emotions, care about others, make good decisions, behave ethically and responsibly, develop positive relationships, and avoid negative behaviours.’ Schools need to reflect and help in the social and emotional development of children to meet the expectations within their community. By integrating thinking, feeling and behaving it is possible to achieve these important life tasks.
Ingrid and I were good friends growing up. Three times a week we did gymnastics, and we spent much of the time in between together as well. Before practice, which started at 4, we would always go to Ingrid’s grandparents, who made us lunch and gave us rides. A second significant role in personality development is emotion. I think that emotions, along with all personality traits, fall onto a continuum. This idea comes from the trait theorists (Burger, 2011, 149). This is especially seen true for extreme personality traits. When a person is particularly extreme in their emotions, they would fall somewhere on a continuum. Either being secure in their emotions, or the opposite of secure. An example of this would be in depression versus vitality. A depressed person has emotions that are negative, self-harmful, cyclical, and miserable. A person with vitality is strong, emotionally stable, active, and energized. There are different emotions that people can feel but several of them fit into the same categories (Burger, 2011, 204). A person can fall anywhere on the continuum but I believe that the end of the spectrum where a person is strong, stable, and able is healthier than a person with depression and its symptoms.
