Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, born 30th April 1939 is a famous American composer and the first woman to receive the Pulitzer award (Rudman, pp.7). Ellen began his compositions while still young and at the time she completed high school, she could play the trumpet, piano, and the violin. After completing a bachelor and masters in music from Florida State University, she taught South Carolina for close to a year. In 1964, she resorted to moving to New York where she learned the violin under the guidance of Ivan Galamian. She later joined the American Symphony Orchestra that was led by Leopold Stokowski during a period when the number of women in the major orchestras was quite low. Professor Laurel Zucker played flute while Professor John Cozza played piano. Both them performance some songs from the popular musician of Paul Taffanel, Olivier Messiaen, Eric Ewazen, Germanie Tailleferre and Charels Griffes. My favorite part of the concert is the second part of their performance. They performed the song from Olivier Messiaen called “Le Merle Noir”. This song expresses the love of nature. The significant character of this song is use blackbird calls. Blackbird calls is uses to motives derived from tone rows. Song of “Le Merle Noir” contains two mainly melodic which are triton and chromatic. It also with Coda pattern of ABA ‘B’. Professor Laurel Zucker and professor John Cozza, played flute and piano and coordinated to each other very well and. Their performance of this song has made me have the feeling of love and peaceful. “Le Merle Noir” is a “birdcalls’ style songs which has 12-tone row and made the audience think it’s creative. Meanwhile, the style of this song, it made the audience sound like improvised. I like this song because when I was listening to it, I feel like I live in a nature, it feels like we are surrounded by forest with many birds singing at the same time. His interest in musical instruments started when he was given a guitar as a present for his fifteenth birthday. Even though he faced challenges at the beginning, Eric has risen to be one of the most influential and important guitarists of all time (Johns, pp.20). At the age of 16, his work had been noticed as he played on various occasions alongside his colleague David Brock. When he turned 17, he joined the R&B group, a local band that performed live. Clapton’s success was evident when he came second in the list of Rolling Stone magazine on the top 100 Greatest Guitarists. During the 1960s, Clapton abandoned the Yardbirds and joined the Blues breakers and John Mayall. His engagements with Mayall was however not very fruitful as he formed a power trio with Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce. During this time, Clapton played improved blues that was mixed with pop. He later created a blues-rock band with Steve Winwood, Baker, and Ric Grech. Throughout the 1970s Clapton’s music resembled the style of J.J Cale and Bob Marley. His work of Bob Marley’s “I Shot the Sheriff” made reggae expand its taste on the market. Two of his leading compositions were Layla that was done with Dominos and Derek, and the second was Crossroads that he performed with Robert Johnson.
