Electronic health records came into practice to improve patient care and efficacy. It provides a full medical record history of patient’s demographics, insurance information, past surgical, medical and family history and much more. The goal of EHR is to improve in quality management for patients, increase efficiency, improve medical practices, and enhance communication amongst providers, patients and health plans. EHR tested by ONC-ATB works with public and private sectors to develop and improve healthcare in America. Since each facility may have their own software, the information may not be carried into software from the patient’s primary care physician. This creates a barrier from one facility to another because the medical information needed is not always readily available. Financial issues may cost the facilities more money than paper charts because of the software updates needed, limited amount of computers, and cost of installing and constant updates. Also, work flow productivity may be slowed depending on how fast or slow staff can pick up on EHR systems. Some staff may be able to learn and take on new updates or find it easy to maneuver and some may find it more difficult, thus slowing the work flow process. Security breaches are a reality issue amongst developing and implementing EHR systems in the medical field. Health information exchange (HIE) is requiring active consent of released records for patient information to promote health privacy. This includes protocols put into place to insure complete entries, reports, and documents are completed to their full integrity. Also, quality assurance provides verification of the accuracy and integrity of the information provided.
