I currently attend the NWACC Nursing program and will graduate on May 13, 2016 with an AS and AAS in Nursing. Obtaining my license immediately after graduation is next objective. My intent for the fall of 2016 is to embark on my journey as a student at the University of Arkansas. As a new nurse that was approaching my first anniversary of employment, I made the very tough decision to return to school to obtain my BSN. I began the RN-BSN program with the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) in August of 2015. My life was already very busy, along with having two children, a husband, and reentering the workforce in a new field, I decided that taking one course at a time would work best for my busy schedule. My focus was to take as many classes as possible, without breaks by following the start dates with the UTA program. There were pre-requisite classes from other schools that I overlapped with the RN-BSN classes because I wanted to complete the program as quickly as possible.
The national shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs) has helped generate formidable interest in the nursing profession among people entering the workforce and those pursuing a career change. According to a report issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service in 2002, the national population is continuing to grow and age and medical services continue to advance, so the need for nurses will continue to increase. They report from 2000 to 2020 the predicted shortage of nurses is expected to grow to 29 percent, compared to a 6 percent shortage in 2000. With the projected supply, demand, and shortage of registered nurses and nursing salaries ever-increasing, the nursing profession can offer countless opportunities. But first one must determine which educational path to pursue, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Associate Degree in nursing (ADN). Most will initially be educated at the associate degree level, even though the American Organization of Nursing Executives (AONE) has recommended a baccalaureate level as a minimal for entry-level nurses. With the expanding number of RN to BSN programs available there is always the option to further one’s education at a later date. The benefits for acquiring a BSN over an ADN include a better knowledge for evidence-based practice, an increased advantage for promotion, and the necessary gateway for higher education.
A registered nurse (RN) is someone that went through a university or college and studied nursing; and then passed the national licensing exam to obtain a license to practice nursing. The degree earned by an RN at the need of the program is deemed a professional nursing degree. The RN top nursing staff and they usually works independently. On the hand, an LPN only earns a practical nursing degree after completion of the program. LPNs are mostly recognized only in USA and Canada; they are also named as License Vocational Nurse (LVN) in the state of California and Texas. LPN work under the supervisor of an RN or a physician.
I will begin my education at Germanna in the fall of 2017 and later transfer to a university to get my bachelors. Pushing myself towards my bachelors can impact my future greatly. Attending Germanna’s nursing program will take about 3 years in total. I have a semester of prerequisites that I have to take before I can even apply to their nursing program. After that semester, there is an application process that everyone applying has to go through. If accepted into the program, I will be attending for two years as a full time student. In that time, I will earn my education and prepare myself for the state test that Virginia provides to all students earning their degree as RNs. After passing the state test and completing my courses at Germanna, I will graduate as a Registered Nurse. In my last year of Germanna’s program, I will have options to specialize in a field of nursing. In that time, I will learn everything and anything about becoming a great labor and delivery
There are many who believe that the next shortage will be worse and the demand for nurses will increase. There will be more jobs available especially with the baby boomer nurses retiring. Wood believes that when nurses retire, the next shortage could be even worse than the previous shortage. According to Wood this would lead to an “intellectual drain of institutional and professional nursing knowledge” (Wood, 2011, para 15). Staiger agrees as well that a shortage of nurses is expected again when nurses retire and since the economy will be more stable full-time nurses will go back to being part-time (Huston, 2017). Miss M.A. is a 75 years old Hispanic, female with a long history of hypertension and diabetes. Ms. MA is widowed and lives with one of her daughters. She worked as a receptionist at a doctor’s office till the age of 65, and she is now retired. She reports that her highest level of education is high school level. In addition to, she reports that she does not drink alcohol or smoke and she does not follow any special diet (M. Amparo, personal communication, June 11, 2016). No I don’t belong to any professional association, But I’m planning to join Kansas State Nurses Association in the future .I do believe that as member in this association I will be able to meet and interact with other professionals and be able to provide a unified voice for nursing in Kansas and to advocate for the health and well-being of all people. I do believe that as member I will be able to meet people from different angle with different idea. By taking advantage of the association resources I can grow as professional.

Working with new graduate nurses has instilled in me the goal to share my knowledge and expertise with others and to teach others the art of nursing. My short-term goals are to complete the Master’s program by the summer of 2014. My second goal is to secure a job as a nurse educator at a hospital and work with my nurse manager to provide program like in-service to the hospital staff and students. I would like to incorporate my education from State University’s master’s program to assist hospital staff and patients in their learning process, with the use of new technology to facilitate the learning and understanding.

On Tuesday, September first I met with my academic advisor, Dr. Ana Londono for the first time. We met in her office on the first floor of Young Hall. She informed me that it was only her third week as an advisor at Lindenwold University. I was a bit nervous after hearing that because my major is Pre-Nursing and I had a lot of questions to ask.
