Eight Habits Of Mind Essay

It’s easy to think that being a good writer is just natural. What some people do not know is that in fact there are a few things called, “habits of mind”, that are necessary in being a successful writer. There is a total of eight habits of mind that will be discussed in this paper. Each habit of mind has its own individual way of making one a successful writer. The eight habits of mind include: curiosity, openness, engagement, creativity, persistence, responsibility, flexibility and metacognition. Some may find that they already use some of these habits and that is great. To use these habits together is powerful. Before reading into the habits of mind, I was introduced to knowing about a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. Carol Dweck says for a growth mindset, “. . . they put more energy into learning” (Dweck, 2016). Putting energy into learning is putting energy into these habits of mind. One habit I fall short on is being creative. According to (“Craft and Composition” 3), “Creativity: the ability to use novel approaches for generating, investigating, and representing ideas.” I struggle when it comes to representing ideas and looking further. Just getting back into writing I know there are many things that I do not know that interfere with my ability to be creative. Reading how other people respond to certain activities and how deep they have gone from just regular common knowledge helps me realize I can be a little more creative. I am realizing that there are now many more ways to help my creativity and knowledge than just a google search. I feel as though my lack of knowing has affected my creativity level. I will also admit I am a little lazy at times and used to just looking for the easy way rather than the correct way. Now that I am open to learning, I know that I can improve my
