Eglantyne Jebb was the leader I identified with because she did not seem to recognize herself as a leader at first, enjoyed simple living, was selfless, and had many influences in her life from family to friends, and her faith. She also resonated with me due to her connection with children and compassion for others who were experiencing hardships. Like Eglantyne, I do not force my spiritual beliefs on others. I also enjoy working with people of different backgrounds, and it seems as though Eglantyne was able to get along with varying groups because she had a clear mission that people were able to connect with regardless where they came from. Many people possess leadership qualities although they don’t rule a country. Meriwether Lewis, the official leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition has been called “undoubtedly the greatest pathfinder this country has ever known.” Just like Hazel, Meriwether Lewis led a group of followers into unknown territory. Everyone has a role model in life, someone to look up to, and someone that inspires people. Temple Grandin is an amazing example of a role model that everyone should have. Temple grandin is inspiring and a role model because she started off as a little girl with autism that people thought she was insane but proved everyone wrong by earning her Ph.D, becoming a scientist and professor of animal science at Colorado State University, and made a revolutionary change in the livestock industry. Temple throughout her life showed courage, strength, determination, kindness and figures out to turn her weakness into her strength. Temple Grandin is an ideal person to follow and a good role model because she never gave up and fought for what she believed in.
I have always admired people with good leadership. The ability to influence others positively is something I respect. I have leadership experiences myself with sports teams and helping younger kids, but I witness leadership every day. Whether it’s seeing someone promote a school event or just being happy that day. Being able to inspire others gives me an incredible feeling because I know important it really is to be a leader.

To inspire and influence others, a leader must possess many skills and abilities. As motivational speaker Peter Northouse, states, “a leader should be strong, but not rude; be kind, but not weak; be bold, but not bully; be thoughtful, but not lazy; be humble, but not timid; be proud, but not arrogant” (Northouse, 2013) Moving an entire group of individuals toward a singular goal is a considerable undertaking. Without effective communication skills and a clear vision of what needs to be accomplished, one will feel like they are trying to herd cats rather than leading.
These are people who in one week, not only became lifelong friends and mentors, but were able to teach me valuable lessons about life, friendship, and leadership that I will carry with me throughout life. The group leaders were able to teach me lessons that I would not have gotten anywhere else. The National Youth and Leadership Forum opened many opportunities for me as a young adult and I would not have changed it for the world. According to the website, I have an IQ of 113. I feel as though a site like www.iqtest.com could produce a “g” score because they make you pay too see an analysis of your results, which indicates to me that they put some effort into producing fairly accurate scores. General intelligence, also known as “g”, describes an individual’s specific mental ability, which is measured by tasks on an IQ test (Myers p. 405). The site breaks down your overall IQ results into different categories of intelligence and gives you an IQ score for how well you tested in a given area. For example, there is a category for “spatial intelligence” which is ones ability to predict what actions will happen based on varied conditions (Website). By looking at the broken down results you can compare areas you have strengths in, versus the areas you might struggle in. This is in accordance to what Charles Sherman found when he discovered that people who score high in one area tend to score high in similar categories (Myers p. 405). For a person to see what their “g” score would be they would simply have to look at which category they scored highest in and from that they would see in which area they have the highest intelligence in.
Who comes to mind when thinking about who the best role model is? Is it a friend? A sibling? Possibly a parent? For me, When thinking about who the best role model to have is, one person in particular comes to mind. I believe that four traits really stand out that make an effective leader. The first trait is self-confidence and this is such an important trait because if you are not confident in your own skills as a leader, your followers will begin to doubt you and your abilities to lead. When you are self-confident as a leader, you are certain in your abilities to influence other people. The second characteristic is determination which is the desire to get the job efficiently and correctly. When you are a determined, you are being proactive and taking initiative to get a job done which is what most leaders do daily (Northouse 25). They understand what needs to be done and support their followers to follow the proper steps to complete a project. The third trait is integrity and it is the quality of being trustworthy and honest. People do not want to follow someone who they cannot trust, which is why this trait is very important. I have no doubt that I made the right choice by choosing organizational leadership. The first critical reflection which gave me an epiphany moment was in Gallos (2008). To start, I could not believe I would find such outstanding caliber of sincerity in a book other than a religious text. His writing on authentic leadership spoke to me greatly. I also stumbled upon another text while doing a scholarly research online, Cameron (2013). Gail’s book on Authentic African leadership: Authentic African leaders defined and the techniques that made them great resonated with me on many levels. It was based on true life experiences of leaders who emerged from the African continent. I was inspired by the first character in her text who she referred to as an authentic leader. Her narration of how the leader overcame challenges of injustice, triumphed against the odds, to emerge as an acclaimed leader appealed to me because I could identify with some of the struggles.
