It is nearly inevitable to go out in public and see a full sleeve tattoo spiraling up a young man’s arm or a tattooed quote peeking out from a cashier’s wrist. Tattoos are rapidly gaining popularity in today’s society. Tattoos are becoming more and more common as the practice continues to gain popularity and acceptance throughout today’s modern world. Over the past decade, tattoos have begun to be viewed as less controversial as they were in previous decades. However, without considering the many risks that result from tattoos, it may not be seen that tattoos could bring more negative effects than positive ones. Consideration of these negative effects may change one’s mind on a decision to get tattooed. Despite the point that tattoos are becoming more acceptable overall, tattoos are still seen as unprofessional by most businesses and employers. Needles used for tattooing can sometimes be unsanitary, or the ink could be extremely harmful to the skin. Although having tattooed skin may be a daring form of self-expression, the practice is also daring in the sense that tattoos bring along countless health risks and can prevent employment opportunities.
Tattoos do have the potential to bring along a positive effect; the results of tattooing art on one’s body can be very rewarding and personal to an individual. People often get tattoos for the purpose of sentimental value. For instance, a young girl may prefer to tattoo an inspirational quote on her backside. Couples may get matching tattoos of their wedding anniversary or something that holds a special meaning to their relationship. Additionally, tattoos could affect potential job opportunities in the future. The business world often views tattoos as unprofessional and bans faculty to have visible tattoos. A visible tattoo could definitely prevent someone from being hired for a job. If that isn’t enough, tattoos can even endanger one’s own health. Do you really want something that isn’t approved by the FDA to penetrate your epidermis? It is even possible to catch a blood borne disease from needles that have not been properly sanitized. In conclusion, tattoos hold a great risk to one’s health, career, and even his or her entire life. Before receiving a tattoo that will last forever, one must weigh out the pros and cons that his or her future body art possesses.
