Transphobia in Today’s Society
Tranny. He-she. Shemale. It. Hermaphrodite. Freak. Transgender people often face discrimination in many ways, whether it be by the use of these slurs or by some form of assault or harassment. Many people, no matter their ages, become disowned by their families or rejected by society for coming out as transgender. Too many times, parents of transgender people force their children to live somewhere other than their homes, such as with other family members or with friends. While they likely are better off without discriminative family around, the sense of being disowned or potentially unloved is often too much for some to handle. Transphobia creates an unsafe world for the transgender community, and, because of its toxic nature, society as a whole needs to strive to lessen and eventually erase transphobia altogether.
However, an umbrella term, or a word that covers more than one specific topic, such as transgender, does not only describe people who identify as the opposite sex; it also describes people who identify with both male and female genders, people who identify as genderless, or people who fluctuate between two or more genders. Many transgender people often refer to themselves simply as “trans.” Transgender does not define one’s sexual orientation, however; gender is considered a social construct while sexuality is not.
Some cisgender people, or people who identify as the genders they were born with, dislike or disagree with the way trans people live because they lack an understanding of what transgender means. Transgender people are sometimes considered to be living their lives sinfully; the King James version of the Bible states, in Genesis 1:27, “[s]o God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he
