Throughout the course this semester we have examined numerous issues, policies and procedures that affect the way law enforcement officers behave, carry out their duties and interact with the public at large and segments of the public on a smaller scale. New technological advances are developed to prevent crime and to enhance the performance of law enforcement officers. However we all know very little regarding why and how some advances are accepted, and the penalties of technology drove solutions to the matter of crime. In this essay we will examine new technological advances developed within law enforcement and how they affect the daily performances and routines for the officers working today.
Advances in law enforcement technology are often divided into hard technology and soft technology. We often see hard technology placed to stop crime like the ever present security cameras, baggage screening, bullet proof windows, metal detectors, and security systems at businesses and homes. Additionally the utilization of private protection devices like mace, tasers, lifeline emergency devices, and ignition interlock systems with alcohol sensors to stop someone from starting a vehicle while intoxicated are seen. Technology advances being employed by law enforcement officers include new weapons, use of force instruments, enhanced patrol cars, and new police protecting gear. Soft technologies involve the strategic use of data to stop crime and to boost the performance of the police. Soft technology advances embody new classification systems, computer code programs, crime analysis techniques, and information sharing techniques.
