Good morning Trinity House High School Little Falls, I am part of the Anti-Slavery International and I am here to speak to you about human trafficking. Human trafficking is a very real issue and it is a major violation of our rights as human beings. Research has shown that human trafficking has an annual income of 150 billion dollars received by traffickers.
Human trafficking is caused by multiple things however two of the main causes are as follows: People who want to get into another country illegally and arrange to be smuggled are sometimes not allowed to leave upon arrival at their destination. The victims are generally women and so they could be mothers, sisters and daughters. This will have an effect on their family by leaving children with no one to look after them or by leaving someone sisterless or daughterless.
The Anti-Slavery International is an international non-government organisation based in the UK. Anti-Slavery International is currently working on the Victim Protection Campaign better identify, protect and support the victims of slavery in the UK, Cotton Crimes campaign to end forced labour in Uzbekistan's cotton industry, and Home Alone campaign to end domestic slavery in the UK and across the world.
The organisation currently runs four programmes:
South Asia Programme primarily focuses on bonded labour in India's brick kilns, and bonded labour practices in Nepal's agriculture. It also runs a project focusing on construction workers migrating to Qatar.
Women and Girls Programme focuses on the gender aspect of vulnerability to slavery and works mainly on projects focusing on migrant domestic workers migrating from Nepal and Bangladesh to Lebanon and within India. It also runs a project supporting child domestic workers in
The Working Group on Contemporary Forms of Slavery monitors the application of slavery laws, conventions, and situations in each country. Each year, a theme was selected by the group in order promote awareness on the matter. Prevention of the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography was selected as a theme in 1989, followed by eradication of the exploitation of child labour and debt bondage in 1990, and prevention of trafficking in persons and exploitation of the prostitution of others in 1991.

Psychological aspects generally play a huge role in these cases, and victims are often verbally and emotionally abused.... ... middle of paper ... ... Human trafficking victims can be forced to do different things such as physical labor and prostitution. The things that usually are key to trafficking are that the victims are vulnerable to anything that involves a better life or involving moving into the U.S. The main reason is that they suffer from poverty; the victims want to help their family with money and are open to whatever way there is to get money. In addition, many in Mexico risk their lives to come to the U.S. hoping that they can find work. They go through parts of Mexico that are considered to have the most violence with drugs, cartels and trafficking are then most often caught by the cartels and have no other choice but to be a slave working to pay off their “debt” that they have to the cartels. There are a ton of women and young children being trafficked as sex slaves all around the world mostly in areas like Thailand or Central Asia. There are 1.5 million sex slaves today; most of them are in Asia, while the remaining is in Thailand. I am going to analyze the many different people and organizations that hold women from their will by forcing them onto the streets....
In the now advanced world, slavery should be an issue of the past, however there are several causes that allows slavery to still be a problem. One main cause of modern day slavery is that “[in many countries] domestic work is not only accepted socially and culturally, but is also regarded in a positive light” ("Domestic work." International Labour Organization). Cultural beliefs of gender roles and the benefit that comes from domestic work makes it a very popular career in several countries, such as Indonesia and China. Other causes of this widespread travesty include “poverty and its feminization, social exclusion, lack of education, gender and ethnic discrimination, violence suffered by children in their own homes, displacement, rural-urban migration and the loss of parents due to conflict and/or disease” and also debt bondage ("Domestic work." All in all, human trafficking is a devious crime. people are deceived and forced into a life of slavery. Many attempts have been made to stop this crime but most have been in vain. human trafficking is a global problem and can be happening in your back yard at this moment.
Human trafficking involves women, children as well as men, but the human traffickers are rather known for kidnapping women. When the victims are being used as slaves for someone else’s personal use, they are also being physically and mentally abused by their overseer to rip apart their self esteem and confidence. These helpless victims are commonly kidnapped, taken by force and drugged and shipped off to another country to be taken advantage of as sex slaves. The United States is known for freedom, human rights, and the pursuit of happiness; however, there are many victims of human trafficking that have been stripped of their rights and freedoms. The Victims of Trafficking andViolence Protection Act (VTVPA) of 2000 defines human trafficking as, the recruitment, harboring, transportation, provision, or obtaining of a person for labor or services, through the use of force, fraud, or coercion for the purpose of subjection to involuntary servitude, peonage, debt bondage, or slavery (Kotrola 8). Human trafficking is a topic that is not discussed very often in society. Many people fail to realize that human trafficking still exists today. Human trafficking violates basic human rights. It takes away the freedom and security of men, women, and children world wide. The diversity and widespread execution of human trafficking make it difficult to regulate and prosecute.
