The course, Effective Written Communications for Public Service Personnel, offered through Rio Hondo college relates to the study of the Administration of Justice in many ways. It is meant to be a preparation course, emphasizing the importance of quality writing for the purpose of police reporting and communication to the various public agencies involved with any type of criminal behavior. Police reporting is one of the most significant elements of overall criminal justice (Gammage, p 22, 2008) and impacts the police chief, the individual officers, the victims, the accused criminal, the lawyers, the judges, the jurors, and the clerical staff.
This course specifically related in the ways it taught how to write concise

First they should be clear with a simple and direct statement of objective so that the reader has no question of the purpose of the report. Reports should also be brief, as the usage of too many words or unnecessary verbiage distracts from the overall message. Police reports should be complete, including statements from all witnesses and clear descriptions, as if painting a picture of what the officer and eye witnesses have seen. Another element of a good report is accuracy. During trials, police reports are often picked apart by both defense and prosecuting lawyers. The facts, with no additions or subtractions must be accurately written in the reports. (Gammage, p15, 2008). Fairness and objectivity are crucial as a bias will easily be detected and the report may be seen as inadmissible. A good report must be written with good English grammar in order to enhance the believability of the qualifications of the writer of the report. One last element of a quality report is the timeliness of completion. The report needs to be written and completed shortly from the time the facts have been gathered in order to preserve the accuracy and have it ready to be utilized by the key players in the process of administering

There are many forms of intercommunication that law enforcement officers’ use. One is the radio system that’s placed in their car, the writing on the car is even a type of communication, the dispatcher, and police reports, and these are just a few. Officers used their radio system to connect with each from car to car, so they can call for backup and described the crime scene to each other. The writing on a police car is almost a giant warning or a giant sign that law enforcement is near and ready to protect. The dispatcher as the name already says is the person who tells which officers to go to which citizen distress call or which crime scene. Police reports may be one of the most important though this can make or break a criminal case. They include evidence found, witnesses statements, assumed time of death
According to our book “Ethical Dilemmas and Decision in Criminal Justice,” we learn, as a class, about the different missions and responsibilities that law enforcement has. The book talks about two specific missions of the law enforcement which are crime fighting and public service. As a law enforcement, professional ethics should be honest and ethical. Although this, in the recent years, we have heard about some of these professionals that have been abused of their position. However, as a society, we should not believe that every person on the law enforcement career is the same.
Most of us write in some form every day, so you would expect that most of us would be well practiced and pretty good at writing. I read and write all the time; I have been taken several college courses and nearly all of them require write of some form. However, before taking this class not only was I not a good writer, I knew I wasn’t a good writer. Now I am not saying that I am ready to write my first novel, but I certainly more confident in turning in my college papers. The content of this course and the style of teaching was incredibly beneficial to me. Throughout this course we had multiple assignments that were aimed to improve us as writers. I am sure that everyone took something different from this course, and I am sure that each student took more from some areas than others; however for me there were three major things that I saw that I benefited from most. Our weekly craft lessons, grammar plan, but most of all, observational learning.
On Tuesday, September 23rd, I had the opportunity to do a ride along with the Takoma Park police department. My ride along was quite interesting. I rode with Officer Carl, a twenty-six-year-old officer who has been with the police department for six months. During the ride along we engaged in so many conversations concerning his work routine, and some the important things to be aware of as a police officer. Officer Carl and I were about the same age group so I felt much comfortable talking to him. Before I went for the ride along I had a different perspective about police work, I thought police work was much amusing and entertaining, but after the ride along with Officer Carl, I have realized that there is much more to police work and it often
1. Discuss the Approaches to assess offenders The most accurate approach to risk assessment relies on objective, actuarial scales. Assessing offenders are based on dynamic risk factors and static factors which predict long-term recidivism risk but are not able to measure changes in risk level. https://www.publicsafety.gc.ca/cnt/rsrcs/pblctns/pprchs-rsksmt/pprchs-rsksmt-eng.pdf
As we may see on television, it may seem as if officers are always out in the field chasing down the criminals but there is more to their jobs than just that. Officer’s jobs also include plenty of documentation. They have to fill out reports about the arrests and the actions that lead up to the arrest. In the past officer used paper and ink pen or even a typewriter to fill out their reports. Now with all the new technology they are ab...
The intellectual battle between police officers and suspects has been ongoing since laws were created. Who did it? Being one of the most popular questions around the globe. There is a multitude of different way to figure out who did it, but one of the most common, and often the only, piece of evidence and investigator can gather is a confession. To get these confessions investigators often use a harsh and aggressive method of interrogation known as the Reid technique. The Reid technique uses a multitude of morally questionable methods to gather a confession such as intimidation, telling the suspect that there is evidence placing them at the scene, and continually refusing to accept the denial of the suspect. These interrogations can also last
Abstract This paper will describe police power and police authority. I will also talk about police discretion as to who gets locked up and who is allowed to go free. The focus is on the issues of police accountability in modern society, and in particular why their accountability is more important than other professions. This is not surprising considering the amount of power and discretion police officers have, and the level of trust that the public holds with these civil servants. Police officers accountability is the biggest thing in their profession which has been an issue of concern they have to be accountable to the police department who want the officer to be an effective and responsible person, to people in the community who have best expectation from an officer and being accountable to themselves for their acts. An ordinary citizen of a country cannot obtain the powers that police officer’s have.
Good communication is essential to how well police officers interact with the public because it influences how the public responds to officers. Listening, speaking, writing and focusing on what others say are all ways officers can affect the way the public views them. A lack of these vital communications skills results in poor understanding, an officer not knowing how to proceed, and people who need police assistance giving up. Officers must also consider how communication might affect a community’s reaction. It is obvious that these traits are very important for optimal police work. Experiences show that people react more calmly and cooperatively when police officers treat them well. Therefore, good communication is needed in order to make the jobs of police officers easier and more positive.
This narrative exhibits a pattern of employing a multiple complicating actions as the male speaker continually fails to get the information he needs. Over the period of time that I was in this course, I thought it would be a very simple and easy to finish class. But as time went on, I found myself to be demanded more of what I think, what I feel, what must be relied on my ability to understand the concepts and conventions of not only the essays, but of what goes on in the writers mind when writing.
A well-written report should include the main information of the incident that occurred. Like in elementary school we were thought the five questions. Who? What? Where? Why? How? I am saying that this is something that should be incorporated into a well-written police report. This will not only answer the main questions primarily asked it will show how detailed the police officer was in writing the report. A well-written report will have good punctuation and grammar. One little missing comma or period can
