Imagine seeing someone who is a staggering six foot nine and 300 pounds (Edmund Emil). This person turns out to be the nicest, most polite person anyone has ever met (Murder). This person is even friends with many cops (Murder). Then they’re charged for 10 accounts of murder and no one could believe this person actually did this (Murder). This was basically what happened with a serial killer named Edmund Emil Kemper III, also known as The Co-Ed Killer (MacLeod). Robert K. Ressler actually said, “One individual who I can think of was described by the prosecutor as the nice serial killer he ever encountered… Edmund Kemper” (Murder). The Co-ed Killer had a total of 10 victims. The victims are Maude and Ed Emil Kemper, Mary Anne Pisce, Anita Luchese, Aiko Koo, Cindy Schall, Rosalind Thorpe, Alice Lui, Clarnell Strandberg, and Sally Hallett (MacLeod). Ed killed mostly innocent, female hitchhikers that were in college (MacLeod). Kemper actually killed the girls due to the fact that he was scared of failing in a relationship with a girl. There are five murders that are talked about the most. These murders are the double homicide of his grandparents, the second double murder, and the murder of his mother. His first victims were his grandparents. He first shot in the kitchen after they had an argument (Edmund Kemper). Then, when his grandfather got home, he walked outside and shot him right by the car (Edmund Kemper). He called his mother to confess the crimes after this happened (Edmund Kemper). He told police that he killed his grandmother just to see what it felt like, and that he killed his grandfather so he wouldn’t have to know that Ed killed his wife (Edmund Kemper). His next pair of victims were murdered eight years later (MacLeod). This was his second homicide on two college roommates (Murder). This murder is one of the top five murders because this started his killing spree. No one knew what happened to these girls until someone found the head of Pisce in the woods (Edmund Kemper). When Ed was caught, he told people what he did to the girls (Edmund Kemper). He first took the one girl into the woods and stabbed her (Edmund Kemper; Murder). Then, he got the other girl into the woods and strangled her (Edmund Kemper). He then took the bodies back to his house, decapitated their heads and hands, and engaged in sexual intercourse with their bodies. The last most talked about murder is the killing of his mother. At night, he went into her room and beat her with a hammer while she slept and cut her throat
Teachers, friends, classmates, relatives and parents could not believe he kills his girlfriend. The reality sometimes is very hard to face especially when feelings are involved. Parents never will accept that their own child who was raised with comfort, love and support could be capable of murder somebody. Edmund Emil Kemper III was born on December 13, 1948 in Burbank, CA. He was born to the union of Edmund E. Kemper Jr. and Clarnell Strandberg. After his parents divorced, Clarnell took Kemper along with his two sisters to live by her very high standards and abusive ways. She berated Kemper mentally by having him sleep in a windowless basement because she feared of the harm he may cause to his sisters. In turn, this caused the hatred that he had for her to fester and turn into hatred against all women. On many occasions Kemper would break off the heads and hands of his sister’s dolls and also have them play the game he called “The gas chamber” in which he was the victim to be executed (Fisher, 2003a).

Almost all people know who serial killers are, but what exactly defines a serial killer. The FBI defines serial murder as “a minimum of three to four victims with a ‘cooling off’ period between, the killer is usually a stranger to the victim, the murders reflect a need to sadistically dominate the victim, and the murder is rarely for profit.” (Vronsky, 2004, p.36) Serial killers are usually a white male from a lower-to-middle-class background typically in his twenties or thirties. Also, 85% of the world’s serial killers live in America, with at least twenty to fifty unidentified active serial killers plotting another one of their killings. On average, every person has seen or met at least 37 serial killers in their lifespan.

Serial killers have many frightening facets. The most frightening thing about them is that experts still do not know what makes a human become a serial killer. Many experts believe serial killers become what they are because they have a genetic disposition or brain abnormality while other experts believe that a serial killer is created by childhood abuse; and some other experts believe that it is a combination of both brain abnormalities and abusive childhood experiences that creates a serial killer. A murderer is considered a serial killer when they “murder three or more persons in at least three separate events with a “cooling off period” between kills” (Mitchell and Aamodt 40). When defining a serial killer, their background, genes, and brain are not mentioned; perhaps one day those aspects of the serial killer can be included.

This paper argues that the killer is not the only one to blame for his/her actions. Together we will probe the minds of killers such as Charles Manson and John Wayne Gacy. 'They often come from families where the parents were absent or ineffective, where authority was not defined, and where they could engage in destructive behavior undeterred-violent play, cruelty to animals, and incidents of arson being some of the childhood behavior patterns noted among many serial killers'; (Clark, p. 206).
