Area of Emphasis EDMU 520 Essay The chosen signature assessment, Tutoring Project, is an assignment from EDMU 520, Literacy and Language in K-8 Classrooms I. This signature assessment expresses the Program Learning Outcome (PLO) number 2, PLO number 3, and PLO number 4. PLO number 2 is Culture, which is describing differences in the cultures of individuals served. PLO number 3 is Instruction, which is being able to implement evidence based and multifaceted methodologies and strategies for teaching and engaging students with exceptionalities. PLO number 4 is Assessment, this is how to utilize achievement tests to assess students in a comprehensive manner. There were times when he is nervous and could not stay focused. The stress of the unknown for Mario seemed to increase his anxiety. I had difficulty understanding him when he read the required text during the assessments. Since Mario was in the second grade I tried a First Grade DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) Test and he did not do well. He assessed better when given the Kindergarten level DIBELS Test. DIBELS is a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills from kindergarten through sixth grade (Good, III, PhD). DIBELS was designed to use with identifying children experiencing difficulty in acquiring fundamental early literacy skills in order to give support early and avoid reading difficulties later (Good, III, PhD). I also used the San Diego Quick Assessment which is a set of graded word lists to determine a student's word recognition ability (ASRP). I did a CORE Phonics Survey that assesses the phonics and phonics related skills that have a high rate of application in beginning reading which presents a number of lists of letters and words for a student to identify or decode (CORE). I was not able to obtain a CELDT (California English Language Development Test) level. The PLO number 2 was addressed through my understanding the differences in culture and seeing that Mario's culture revolves around collectivism instead of individualism.. PLO number 4, was addressed with using and describing assessments that are quick and easy to use to assess new students to the classroom. While most of my students are just beginning to identify the letters of the alphabet, I have used DIBELS and the San Diego Quick Assessment for new students that are beginning readers. PLO number 3, addressed instruction strategies. These are strategies I use in my classroom with my students and they work great. Each child is different and being able to adjust individualized instruction has helped immensely with the assessments, instructional strategies, and understanding the cultural differences of each of the students.
