The research emphasizes the tension in the fields of psychiatry and psychotherapy between those who are in favor of using Ecstasy as a therapeutic drug, and those who are concerned about the drug’s damaging effects. In addition, the purpose of this research was to define the impact of Ecstasy on brain function. In fact, it argues that Ecstasy usage is associated with a chronic change in brain function. FMRI was used to examine brain activation during visual stimulation, in young Ecstasy user ages 18-35, and in subjects who had not previously used Ecstasy.
