EBay in India
After being successful in china and learning its lesson while also improving their strategy they went ahead into the Indian market to look for expansion in the second most populated country in the world. EBay agreed to acquire Baazee.com for $50 million. Baazee was founded by two Indian-born Harvard graduates Avnish Bajaj and Suvir Sujan. During their college years in the U.S, eBay was taking off successfully in the U.S and so was the dot com craze. Baazee is very similar to eBay, in fact they called it the Indian version of eBay. It was the biggest operator in India for online auction. Baazee had more than 1 million registered customers, however India still remains a small Internet market compared to china and the U.S. Avnish Bajaj said in a statement “ Our local expertise combined with eBay’s global perspective will allow us to take e-commerce in India to the next level”.
CEO Meg Whitman mentioned that this step would help in expanding eBay’s international operations and also entering the Indian market (Nick, 2004)
After being successful in India eBay than introduced the EasyBuy service. It is an official program from eBay. EasyBuy allows Indian buyers to order items from international sellers and get them shipped to their address in India. If a buyer buys a good from eBay they then get it shipped to the address in India, the buyer is personally responsible for shipping, handling and custom duty tax. If the buyers buy the good from eBay India Global EasyBuy then the buyer does not have to worry about the shipping, handling and custom duty tax because the service includes all that. Finally one very important thing that eBay should focus on is security. Going global means more and more complex knowledge-based work is required. EBay had many issues with security and breaches in the past. Malicious hackers have been attacking eBay’s network. EBay does its best to keep their security to the best possible level however that is not enough (Dan, 2007) personal information is very valuable and should not be compromised at any cost. If these security problems keep going on eBay will loose the trust of its customers. It is very important for eBay to keep in mind that as they expand their market, so should they also invest in the best security possible to avoid any incidents in future or the incident can become a barrier to success in future.
