Due to the advancements in the food industry, produce and other products have since became brimming with additives. This shift in authenticity sparked the award winning author Michael Pollan to compose “Eat Food: Food Defined”. Pollan educates readers of methods they can use in order to avoid harmful additives. Through the effective use of comparisons, logos and exemplification, Pollan encourage his audience to take responsibility with what they are eating. Throughout the work, Pollan continually uses compare-contrast scenarios to emphasise a need for people to acquire more responsibility. On page 11, Pollan offers an alternative train of thought where someone was to find themselves not knowing what a Go-Gurt Yogurt tube was. While this situation may be rare, he mentions how someone confused on its content may believe it to be toothpaste or some other substance. However, despite the oddness of not know this common product in households across the country, it brings to light the content of Go-Gurts. How much of products such as these and also Sara Lee’s Soft & Smooth Whole Grain White Bread, mentioned on page 13, real food and how much is chemicals. It is necessary Pollan bring to light examples of products such as to provide future consumers with a better understanding of the food they are consuming and the effects it will have on their body. Therefore leading to a better awareness of its source and quality.

Pollan’s essay effectively uses compare & contrast, logos, & analogies in order to persuade his audience to be more responsible with their eating decisions.
