Nowadays, following a plant based diets or vegetarian diets are easier for those who have a heart because of the unpleasant treatment of the animals before they are butchered and served to the consumers. Regardless of how the animal cruelty factor is sickening, eating an animal’s meat that was treated this way may cause many different health problems to you or to your children. Eating meat could also harm the environment. If somebody decides to raise animals in his land instead of growing crops, they will need to cut all the plants and the trees that already grew in their land just to keep the place suitable to raise animals. Being a utilitarian ethicist means caring only about the result and how to promote the happiness for the greatest number of people. In John Stuart Mill and Jeremy Bentham’s point of view, “only happiness is an end in itself, therefore it is the only true standard of goodness.”(Beyond Bumper sticker, P: 98) which means that utilitarian ethicist should only care about the result that promote the greatest happiness to the greatest number of people. As an example for a utilitarian ethicist, if there was 10 people working for a cruel person, and they do not want to stay with him anymore but there is no way to escape. Killing that person will promote the greatest happiness for all the workers. Which means killing him is the ethical right action to do. The responding to Michael Pollan’s recommendation as a utilitarian ethicist will be, if eating meat will make the greatest number of people happy and satisfied, then nothing will matter. However, if that will increase the global starving, then we should cut off eating meat immediately. Utilitarian ethicist cares more about the number of people who will feel happy as a result of that action. Cutting off meat from our diet will not have a huge impact on us since we have alternatives, however, it will change many poor people’s lives and it will help to end the global starving. Also, it will make the environment friends society happier. In one hand, being a utilitarian ethicist helps you to think more about others and makes you less selfish. But on the other hand, utilitarianism ethics has some weaknesses that makes it hard to follow sometimes. For instance, it always depended on the result, without caring if that will negatively affect someone or will cause harm to anyone, as long as it promotes the greatest happiness for the vast of the majority, then that is the right ethical action.
