The selection of movie I chose for the Sociology Movie Review was “Easy A,” the 2010 American teen comedy written by Bert V. Royal. The movie starting Emma Stone, who plays Olive, takes place in a California high school where gossip and lies seem to be like most typical American high schools today. With the setting placed in 2010, Olive’s life is portrayed with a best friend, Rhiannon, hippie parents, and an adopted brother. With the pressures of high school, Olive is put in a compelling situation with her best friend, Rhiannon. Olive ends up lying Rhiannon in the bathroom, explaining how she lost her virginity to a college boy over the weekend. Social interaction refers to the way in which people respond to one another, whether it’s via telephone, computer, or in person (Schaefer). When Olive wanted to get her message out to the students in order to clear her name, she chose to make an announcement at the pep-assembly to the entire student body that she would hold a live video chat clearing her name and the story behind all the rumors going around about her. The video chat would explain that the whole situation was an entire lie. Olive would go through and explain each instance with each boy. The explanation went into detail how boys wanted to gain social acceptance. How the boys would pay Olive in either gift cards to restaurants or cash for Olive to say the boys had sexual relations with them and Olive. By having a rumor go around the high school that a boy had sexual relations with Olive, it gained the males a stronger status than what they previously had. Status refers to any full range of socially defined positions within a large group or society (Schaefer). The ascribed status is assigned to a person by society without regard for the person’s unique talents or characteristics (Schaefer). Olive’s ascribed status was that of a whore because she made it a point to let the rumors spread and lies continue saying she was sleeping around with the male students of the high school. Poor Kids is a documentary that highlights a major issue the United States is suffering from. This issue is known as poverty, more specifically, childhood poverty. This documentary views the world through the eyes of children that are subjected to lives of poverty due to the poor financial state that their parents are in. Life is very rough for these children and they must live their everyday lives with little to none of the luxuries most people take for granted. Poor Kids sheds light on the painful fact that there are children that starve every day in the United States.

Inside Out is a film about a young girl named, Riley, whose world gets turned upside down once her family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco. In this film, Riley’s five main emotions are personified. Riley, who is only eleven years old, is known for her joyous attitude but with the drastic change of lifestyle, she begins to show and feel many other emotions. As Riley and her family are adjusting to their new surroundings, she becomes more irritable and rebellious. As depicted in the film, Riley’s emotions, Joy and Sadness, get lost trying to find their way back to Headquarters. The movie Easy A is certainly iconic in countless different ways. First, the hit film gave one of the Hollywood’s well known movie stars, Emma Stone, her stardom. Second, although the movie is certainly controversial due to the sexual context, it has some valuable life lessons. I will be discussing three major conflicts that occur in the movie that include the spread of rumors, the consequences of lying and how exonerating the truth isn’t always simple.
Time and language are both basic constructs for society. Individuals depend on the existence of time to organize their lives and language to have the ability to communicate with those around them. The films theatrical nature requires more close-ups than wide-screen shots to capture the character’s psychological turmoil. For example, Fred and Jonathan’s car ride is captured in a close-up to signify their friendship; however their relationship deteriorates after Jonathan’s deceit. In the documentary “Fed Up,” sugar is responsible for Americas rising obesity rate, which is happening even with the great stress that is set on exercise and portion control for those who are overweight. Fed Up is a film directed by Stephanie Soechtig, with Executive Producers Katie Couric and Laurie David. The filmmaker’s intent is mainly to inform people of the dangers of too much sugar, but it also talks about the fat’s in our diets and the food corporation shadiness. The filmmaker wants to educate the country on the effects of a poor diet and to open eyes to the obesity catastrophe in the United States. The main debate used is that sugar is the direct matter of obesity. Overall, I don’t believe the filmmaker’s debate was successful.
The entire movie is littered with anxiety. The movie makes you anxious as to what may happen next. This primary example is the scene where Skeeter ask Aibileen to tell her personal stories for the book Skeeter is writing. This rose a very serious anxiety in both women. Skeeter also found other maids to also share their personal stories. This scenario caused extreme anxiety because in that day and time if you were to publish or talk about what the maids have to endure, you could be prosecuted or maybe even killed.
“Honor is the value of a person in his or her own eyes. Honor is a claim to worth along with social acknowledgement of worth.” (Malina 31) This phrase tells us that honor was extremely important to the ancient people. Honor is a value that was present during many occasions in the play. This value can be seen in Oedipus. He promised the citizens of Thebes that he would find the murderer of Laius and free the lands from the plague. The murderer was to be exiled from Thebes. Oedipus later found out that he himself was the murderer. Even though he was king, he honored the punishment and exiled himself from Thebes. The New Testament states that honor in women meant positive shame. Positive shame is the sensitivity of one 's own reputation. A shameless person is considered a dishonorable woman. Women have to be ashamed and remain shy to avoid human contacts that might expose her to dishonor. (Malina 50) This value can be seen in Jocasta. The movie I decided to analyze for this course was American History X (1998), which stars Edward Norton. Though this movie isn’t widely known, it is one of the more interesting movies I have seen. It’s probably one of the best films that depict the Neo Nazi plague on American culture. The film takes place from the mid to late 1990’s during the Internet boom, and touches on subjects from affirmative action to Rodney King. One of the highlights of this movie that really relates to one of the key aspects of this course is the deterrence of capital punishment. Edward Norton’s portrayal as the grief stricken older brother who turns to racist ideologies and violence to cope with his fathers death, completely disregards the consequences of his actions as he brutally murders someone in front of his family for trying to steal his car. The unstable mentality that he developed after his father’s death really goes hand-to-hand specifically with Isaac Ehrlich’s study of capital punishment and deterrence. Although this movie is entirely fictional, a lot of the central themes (racism, crime punishment, gang pervasiveness, and one’s own vulnerability) are accurate representations of the very problems that essentially afflict us as a society.
Sex, love, depression, guilt, trust, all are topics presented in this remarkably well written and performed drama. The Flick, a 2014 Pulitzer Prize winning drama by Annie Baker, serves to provide a social commentary which will leave the audience deep in thought well after the curtain closes. Emporia State Universities Production of this masterpiece was a masterpiece in itself, from the stunningly genuine portrayal of the characters of Avery and Rose, to the realism found within the set, every aspect of the production was superb.
I think that Sicko is basically an exposure of Moore's point of view about the American failures on the healthcare system. Some of this failure include patients that must pay their treatments even when they have health insurance. This is called medically need and is just for emergencies. I found fascinating and so interesting that the filmmaker, Moore, introduces specific characters to exemplify main problems that those fifty million people are victims of, because they don't have healthcare (Moore,2007). I must say that this movie makes me realize this kind of issue that is being faced by the majority of American since more than a decade ago; which it's very sad and shocking to those fellows like me that were not aware of what exactly was going
A League of Their Own (Marshall, 1992) explicitly characterizes an American era when a woman’s place was in the home. Even our modern perspective implicitly follows suit. Although women have gained rights and freedoms since the 1930’s, sexism remains prevalent in America. This film offers an illustration when men went to war and big business men utilized women as temporary replacements in factories, sports, and so on. Here, course concepts, such as gender socialization, gender expressions, role stereotypes, emotion expressions, and language, correspond to the film’s characters and themes.
