The selection of movie I chose for the Sociology Movie Review was “Easy A,” the 2010 American teen comedy written by Bert V. Royal. The movie starting Emma Stone, who plays Olive, takes place in a California high school where gossip and lies seem to be like most typical American high schools today. With the setting placed in 2010, Olive’s life is portrayed with a best friend, Rhiannon, hippie parents, and an adopted brother. With the pressures of high school, Olive is put in a compelling situation with her best friend, Rhiannon. Olive ends up lying Rhiannon in the bathroom, explaining how she lost her virginity to a college boy over the weekend. Social interaction refers to the way in which people respond to one another, whether it’s via telephone, computer, or in person (Schaefer). When Olive wanted to get her message out to the students in order to clear her name, she chose to make an announcement at the pep-assembly to the entire student body that she would hold a live video chat clearing her name and the story behind all the rumors going around about her. The video chat would explain that the whole situation was an entire lie. Olive would go through and explain each instance with each boy. The explanation went into detail how boys wanted to gain social acceptance. How the boys would pay Olive in either gift cards to restaurants or cash for Olive to say the boys had sexual relations with them and Olive. By having a rumor go around the high school that a boy had sexual relations with Olive, it gained the males a stronger status than what they previously had. Status refers to any full range of socially defined positions within a large group or society (Schaefer). The ascribed status is assigned to a person by society without regard for the person’s unique talents or characteristics (Schaefer). Olive’s ascribed status was that of a whore because she made it a point to let the rumors spread and lies continue saying she was sleeping around with the male students of the high school.
