Have you ever wondered about the real value of a youth leadership program or more specifically the scouting movement? Well here I will show you a little about what this scouting movement is all about, the benefits that such a program can have on youth and the lasting impacts that this programs has had. You will gain valuable insight as to why parents should support and encourage their children to become and remain active in the scouting movement with the Boy Scouts of America and the Girl Scouts of the United States.

The similarities can easily be seen in the Girl Scout Promise and Law: the Girl Scout Promise “On my honor, I will try: to serve God and my country, to help people at all times, and to live by the Girl Scout Law” (Girl Scouts) and the Girl Scout Law “I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout” (Girl Scouts). His 1994 article, “Culture Wars against the Boy Scouts” he takes a look at how in the 1980s the Boy Scouts of America came under attack by feminists, atheists, and homosexuals working with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). This attack was in regard to the Boys Scouts, a private organization, teaching and encouragement of moral traditions and if they, the Boy Scouts, were protected by law. According to scouting’s moral beliefs homosexuality had no place within their organization. The ACLU became involved stating that such a principle violates the “equal public accommodations” within the state Civil Rights Act. This was the first of many cases that the Boy Scouts would come under including cases such as requiring youth to abide religious requirements to earn awards. In an organization where 30 percent are sponsored by religious organizations and churches there should be no surprise of the requirement that members be religiously active. Other major groups sponsoring scout units are various civic organizations, police and fire departments all of these are organizations do what they do to help others. In 1993, federal courts decided that “Boy Scouts were not ‘a place of public accommodation’ and thus were not covered by the Civil Rights Act of 1964” (Donohue 61).
