In today’s business world, people are sometimes torn between their commitment to their employer and their commitment to their friends. This internal struggle has the potential to lead to unethical business practices that can cost companies millions. Because of unethical business practices by employees, some corporations feel they are limited in their sense of duty to their employees, while others, like Malden Mills, believe loyalty to employees goes beyond a simple pay check, they feel they have a duty of care to their employees that treat them like family. This best interest I speak of is known as a duty of care, which requires employers to remain vigilant of their legal and corporate social responsibilities. Corporations can no longer provide working conditions that resemble the those of the Industrial Revolution; they must provide a safe working environment that is healthy for people to do their work. According to the Business Dictionary, Duty of Care is defined as a person who is in a position where their actions can affect someone else; they owe a duty to that other person to conduct themselves in a way that will not intentionally harm that other person. These dilemmas can be some of the hardest decisions to make because there is a distinction between legal duty and a moral obligation.
