Duty Night Reflection I completed my duty night on October 22nd, which was also concurrent with the wild and extremely entertaining Penn State vs. Ohio State football game. I arrived at 7:45pm at Brill hall where I met with Cheryl and Mitchell, who were the two RA’s I would be accompanied with for the evening. They discussed why two RA’s are on duty (football game); the times we would be rounding, and retrieved the “Duty Bag” from the residence office in Brill. We began the first round at 8:30pm and made our way through Curry, Harris, Miller, Nelson, Panofsky, Young, and Brill hall. We traveled through the “pods” on one floor, to buildings with four floors. We first discussed at 3 rounds are done on Fridays and the weekends, with the times being chosen by the RA at Eastview. Then Cheryl, discussed the RA’s general responsibilities when rounding each floor: changing the pin, examining fire extinguishers, responding to calls, referring those who commit violations, and in general maintaining a safe environment. For instance, one can round at 8:30 pm, 10:30 PM, and 1:00 am. During this time the RA on duty must not leave the building, and must always have the RA phone with them. Additionally, during the 1st round the RA is responsible to switch the Pin on the “Who’s on Duty?” in order to notify residents of the RA on duty for the night. However, after the emergency has past or once you have called 911 you must notify the residence life coordinator. More specifically, the coordinator on duty can be contacted by using the RA phone. The next day the RA must notify the coordinator of what happened, where incidents occurred, and the consequence of these occurrences. Examples of situations I was given of when to call the coordinator on duty was for alcohol cases, marijuana, and major events. Likewise, if any problems arise with housing or maintenance, you should notify the coordinator on duty. On the other hand, the police should be called in emergency cases in which a resident or other residents are in danger or illegal activity is being done like marijuana use or if someone is excessive alcohol consumption. Also, I was told you may call 911 but the local Penn State police number is quicker. Next demonstrated to me was the “incident report”; included in it is the students PSU ID, time the incident occurred, whether a minor was involved, description of incident. Additionally, the
