The Concept of Duplicity Duplicity is the idea of being two faced or living a double life. The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, written by R.L. Stevenson is about a well known scientist named Dr. Jekyll who has split up his personality into two. One side of his personality, Dr. Jekyll is very personable and liked by many, while the other side, Mr. Hyde, is menacing and deranged. Throughout the story only few people know of Dr. Jekyll’s secret identity. As the story continues, Mr. Hyde’s behavior becomes more and more erratic with each person he kills, until finally, Dr. Jekyll has no choice but to end his life to stop Hyde from causing anymore trouble. In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde duplicity is shown through the separation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the physical appearance and attitude of both men, and Dr. Jekyll keeping Mr. Hyde a secret. To begin with, duplicity is seen in the novel through the separation of Dr. Jekyll’s personality into two people. Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde show the contradiction of good and evil fighting against each other in the human mind. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde through the physical appearances of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Dr. Jekyll is described as “pale and dwarfish, giving an impression of deformity without any nameable malformation, with a displeasing smile” (Chapter 2, Stevenson) by Utterson. When asked to describe Mr. Hyde people commonly described how there was something about him that they couldn’t point out. This feeling that everyone got was the feeling of pure evil radiating off of Hyde. Hyde kept to himself and rarely came out of his house, which also reflected Hyde’s personality.
