Hypothesis: Poetry still has a massive capability of evoking strong emotions and visions on the everyday person reminding the what life was/is going to be like.

The poem Dulce Et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen captures the reader and transports them back to a time or war and hardship, reminding them of our history and how society made the wrong decision all those years ago.

Dulce et Decorum Est is about the horrific situation that men went through in trench war fare, ‘Bent double, like old beggars under sacks, Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge’. The poem depicts the struggle to survive and the traumatic experiences of the first world war from the horrible conditions that the men had to face, to the gassing of all those around them. This is evident throughout the poem. ‘Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots, of tired, outstripped Five-Nines that dropped behind. Gas! Gas! Quick, boys!- An ecstasy of fumbling’. This use of oxymoron’s allows the reader to create an image in their minds thus bring them closer to the horrific setting of the poem and allowing them to really feel as if they were there themselves. …show more content…

The writer positions the reader to walk in his shoes and experience his loss. Society can relate to this tragic story because of our history with war and violence. Most of the modern world has either see war in its time or has experienced it first hand. The poems title ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ is a line from a Roman poet (Horace's Odes), meaning; ‘It is sweet and glorious to die for one's country’. This is ironic considering the contents of the poem which are certainly not sweet and
