What caused the civil war? The Civil War started when the confederate warships shot at the union soldiers at Fort Sumter, in South Carolina on April 12, in 1861. It ended in the spring of, 1865 because General Robert E. Lee had surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant on April 9. But it still wasn’t over until the last battle at Palmito Ranch in Texas on May 13. But before there was a civil war there was slavery and events that would attempt to end it. The Dred Scott Decision. Played a role in what started the civil war cause as a born slave from Virginia who tried to sue the federal court for his freedom.
