With chapter three starting, Harker realizes that he is a prisoner in Dracula's castle, he becomes panicked and feels helplessness. At first he believes that he is going mad, but then recovers quickly and tries to think about what he must do to survive. He becomes grateful for the crucifix which was given to him; which is ironic as he is not a religious man. Despite the crucifix above him, Harker finds sleep impossible. As he is pacing in his room, he happens to see Dracula leave his room twice. Harker mentions Dracula slithers our, like a lizard, with his cloak spread out around him like bat wings. Very shortly after, Harker records that he fears for his sanity; One of Harker's favorite rooms in the castle is one that he feels was probably a woman's room. It is in this room that three women appear before Harker. Two of the women are dark with vivid red eyes. As two sharp teeth touch his neck, Count Dracula suddenly sweeps in, ordering the women out. Oddly, the man looks like he was half current age. The reason, however, is clear. He has been renewed by blood; blotches of fresh blood leak from the corners of his mouth and run over his chin and neck. The thought of Harker accompanying "this monster" to travel to England to victimize English men and women horrifies Harker. He takes a shovel and swings madly at the Count's face Dracula's mad eyes paralyze Harker so much that the blow only just grazes Dracula's forehead. Then, suddenly hearing voices, Harker flees to his room; where he hears boxes being filled with earth and the covers nailed shut below. Next her hears the sound of wheels in the driveway, and the cracks of a whip. He is convinced that he is absolutely alone, and Dracula is off for England to wreak his evil.
