Dr. Lecter’s attitude towards Clarice changes throughout the movie through direct exposure. His attitude towards Clarice is first dismissive. He realizes during their first interview that he was being dissected by Clarice (his response when she attempts to give him a questionnaire to fill out) and shuts down his interest, making it obvious that he has a negative attitude towards her. Throughout the rest of the movie, his attitude towards her becomes more positive, even coming as close as him showing physical affection towards her. This example becomes apparent when Clarice is being led away by security because of her lack of necessary involvement in the case at that time. Lecter remains neutral through the movie. It’s neither negative nor positive. Dr. Lecter is merely a means to an end for Clarice. She’s involved with him simply because she was asked to, and has to catch a killer in order to save lives. Persuasion was a tool used by Clarice in order to help raise Dr. Lecter’s attitude towards her, in hopes to increase her chances of getting vital information from him. She used Central route of persuasion. Clarice offered Dr. Lecter a great opportunity to be able to go outside, and swim in the ocean, for one full week out of the year in exchange for information about Buffalo Bill. Dr. Lecter was suspicious at first, but the persuasion source was credible to him. He may not have respected Clarice at this point, but he trusted her. He was familiar with her, attracted to her, and accepted the expertise she insisted she had on the subject. The scene that introduces Buffalo Bill uses the same idea of deception that Ted Bundy used to kidnap his victims, by pretending to be injured in able to get his victim not only find him harmless, but to approach him to help.
