In the eyewitness account encountered by Dr. Elwood Harvey, he saw a brutal auction of slaves in front of him. He saw the slave’s clueless faces when they slowly walked up the platform in front of many greedy future owners. All of a sudden the slaves got a glowing eyeball of fear realizing they were about to be sold. The slaves broke into complete chaos: some hid, some collapsed, some tried to keep close to their family, and some stood brave on the platform. His parents were from a rural town in Georgia, Sir Alton Brown and his wife moved with their son, when he was 7, back to their home town. This is where Alton spent the rest of his days growing up. Slavery is one of America’s biggest regrets. Treating a human with the same beating heart as a low, worthless piece of trash only because of skin color is a fact that will forever remain in our country’s history. Those marked as slaves were sold, tortured, demoralized, raped and killed. After the Emancipation in which slavery was illegalized, many would think that the horrors were over and that America as a whole started a new leaf. Unfortunately, the man of the South, refusing to move forward tried to keep the colored man down as best they could. Their premeditated plans and actions to find an excuse to continue torturing and killing the Negro man continued for years, which are documented in “A Red Record”. This story captures the grueling events African Americans were put through and the unfairness of the times. By capturing and sharing this history it will make sure these mistakes can never be repeated again .
In this story it clearly shows us what the courts really mean by freedom, equality, liberty, property and equal protection of the laws. The story traces the legal challenges that affected African Americans freedom. To justify slavery as the “the way things were” still begs to define what lied beneath slave owner’s abilities to look past the wounded eyes and beating hearts of the African Americans that were so brutally possessed.

As the United States grew, the institution of slavery became a way of life in the southern states, while northern states began to abolish it. While the majority of free blacks lived in poverty, some were able to establish successful businesses that helped the Black community. Racial discrimination often meant that Blacks were not welcome or would be mistreated in White businesses and other establishments. Slavery has always been viewed as one of the most scandalous times in American history. It appears that the entire institution of slavery has been capsulized as white masters torturing defenseless African Americans. However, not every slave has encountered this experience. In this essay I will present the life of two former slaves Harriet Smith and Mr. George Johnson and how similar as well as different their experiences were based on interviews conducted with each of them. The negative aspects of slave life were undeniably heinous and for that reason especially, it is also important to also reveal the lives of slaves whom were treated with dignity and respect.
Slavery was a fulsome practice that was practiced by the Southern states in the antebellum and Civil War period. This practice viewed today, and by some then as morally unacceptable, was accepted in Southern society as a necessary evil. Many Northerners and some Southerners alike did not know how slaves suffered, but one slave would show how the slaves suffered. This slave's name was Frederick Douglass. In his book The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, he exposed the horrors of slavery. Douglass tells of the atrocities of slavery, to expose the defense of the cruel atrocities by slaveholders, and to incite the Northern populace to exhort the abolishment of slavery.
Often slaves were traded like livestock and forced to relocate from their familiar to the unknown. Female slaves were often raped by their male owners. Any offspring from such encounters suffered additionally due to resentment from the owner’s wife and were also often forced to relocate. Food and clothing were meagerly provided. Slave labor was incessant. Abuse and brutality were rampant. Beatings and whippings were common place. Numerous slave killings were never brought to justice. Fear and hopelessness knew no bounds. In chapter 5 of The other Wes Moore by Wes Moore, both protagonist are encountered with being taken out of their environment. In the 5th chapter the author Wes was sent to military school and the other Wes is arrested after shooting a “jump off's cousin”(105-106). For Wes being taken out of his loose Bronx environment and being put into a strict military environment drove him crazy. The insanity Wes faced can be attributed to the apparent structure the military school had, unlike the Bronx. Like the title of chapter 5 both Wes and the other Wes are lost beyond belief, although they are both lost they both have an opportunity to grow from an change in environment.
“Black Awakening in Capitalist America”, Robert Allen’s critical analysis of the structure of the U.S.’s capitalist system, and his views of the manner in which it exploits and feeds on the cultures, societies, and economies of less influential peoples to satiate its ever growing series of needs and base desires. From a rhetorical analysis perspective, Allen describes and supports the evidence he sees for the theory of neocolonialism, and what he sees as the black people’s place within an imperial society where the power of white influence reigns supreme. In preparation for the auction, slaves were put in stables and treated like animals. If they had wounds or scars they would be covered in tar or hot oils to make them look fresher. Up to a week before an auction, buyers would inspect the slaves. This means forcing them to lift their arms up, open their mouths, run back and forth and make them get into different poses. If anyone had an injury or a wound, their price would go down substantially A man in the prime of his life was worth $1,600. That was equivalent to approximately $35,200 in today’s dollars. If the slave has a rupture, that lowers his price to $300. Solomon Northrup, a former slave once said, “He would make us hold our hands up over our heads, walk us briskly back and forth, while customers would feel our hands, arms and bodies.”
When it comes to slavery the exact amount slaves that were kidnapped and taken to the new world is in question that many ponder about within the world. However, in the “Slave Trade” article, published by Dr. Bailey, the slave trade database (created by Harvard University) concluded, that at least eleven million slaves were transported from 1519 and 1867. Just let that number soak into your head “elven million” and to add more pain to the sore, more than twenty-seven thousand voyages helped delivered these “elven million”.
