There was an startling panic that set among students of Dorothea Lange Elementary School after a school bus spontaneously started on fire around 3:30 p.m. on September 22. The school bus was loaded with students at the time, but no injuries arose from the fire due to exemplary actions from the driver of the bus, as well as Dorothea Lange students. The school asks that all bus drivers demonstrate emergency escaping methods to the students during the beginning of the school year, according to Principal Jill Jacque, and it may have just been that education that saved the estimated 23 students lives. Through out the Great Depression there were many photographers, but one of the best was Dorothea Lange. Lange was born on the 25th of May in 1895 in Hoboken, New Jersey as the first child of Joan and Henry Nutzhorn. She decided to become a photographer at the age of 18. She studied photography at Columbia University in New York. At the age of 20 she began to travel the world. Later in life she settled down in San Francisco, California, where she met her first husband, artist Maynard Dixon. She had had to children Daniel (1925) and John (1928). She died on the 11th of October in 1916. Even Though some people believe Dorothea Lange was not a great photographer, Dorothea was because she caused great inspiration of those going through the hard times of the Great Depression, she also showed us that some of are problems may not as bad as other peoples.
In the late 1920’s, school buses and larger industrial vehicles became a popular source of transportation that started from Ford dealership owner, A.L. Luce. Luce had plans to extend the school bus frame (from a Model T) to accompany more students per one bus. As school buses and city buses became more common throughout America’s cities for daily transportation, safety regulations and precautions were put in place. Safety features, including flashing caution lights, visors outside of the vehicle, and motorized stop signs and stop arms were all installed within the next 80 years to make the journey to and from school safer. Although many of these precautions were taken, many citizens believe that not enough action was taken to promote safety on school buses. Because a variety of school bus companies do not have a stance on whether seatbelts should be installed or not, the safety concerns mainly impact parents and school leaders. A good solution for many of those concerned would be the installation of seatbelts on every school bus within the United States, but the reality of seatbelts being on buses is quite the opposite of what people believe. Seatbelts are not the justification to these safety issues concerning school corporations and parents nationwide, as the seatbelts are a costly and dangerous factor.
Mahoney was traveling north in the southbound lane at an extremely high amount of speed. The right front of the pickup truck hit the right front of the bus, breaking off the bus’s suspension and driving the leaf spring backward into the gas tank mounted outside the frame, just behind the front door. The spring speared the sixty-gallon tank, which had just been filled ten minutes earlier, punching a two and a half-inch hole in it. The gas tank caught fire and killed twenty-seven of the sixty-seven people on board. If the pickup had hit a few inches to the right, it would have been stopped by the bus’s frame rail instead of shearing trough sheet metal toward the fuel tank.

I provided a link to access my artifact, a picture of Harriet Tubman. The artifact (picture) was on an invitation to honor Dr. Charles L. Blockson who was was a writer, historian and was once a member of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania for his donations which were authentic pictures of Harriet Tubman. Now considered artifacts in the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture and the maker of the invitation was Chairman Robert A. Brandy of the Committee on House Administration. These artifacts are in a museum that is open to the public. Tubman is amousnt many one of the most fearless women due to her escaping slavery in the 1800's and her leadership when she lead more than 700 African Americans out of the Underground
Dorothea Lange was born on May 26, 1895 in Hoboken, New Jersey to second-generation German immigrants. Her passion for photography began when she attended Columbia University in New York City, and eventually her talent landed her several prestigious apprenticeships in New York photography studios. After graduation Lange moved to San Francisco and opened her own successful portrait studio in 1919. Lange’s work was primarily portrait photography for upper-class families in San Francisco, however her work drastically changed with the onset of a massive economic recession.

As an adult, she risked her life almost every day to save others and after she died, she has received many awards, including her beating Andrew Jackson to be the face of the $20 bill. One of the most memorable bus experiences in my life happened when I was in fifth grade. The final bell at school had rung, so I sprinted out to the bus with a few of my friends to save seats since our bus was always crowded. After we flung our backpacks into the four back seats, we ran back inside the school to buy some Mountain Dew from the pop machine in the cafeteria. After jamming our quarters into the machine and snatching the cans out of the bin, we sprinted back outside to make sure we did not miss the bus. It was still there, in all its yellow glory, so we hurried through the doors and onto the bus.
