Domestic violence can be very dangerous, it can lead to all types of different altercations by another person. There are many reasons as to why domestic violence happens and what causes a person to be in complete control of another person. "Domestic Violence" talks about domestic violence by one person. "Domestic Violence" indicates that, "Domestic violence is controlled by one partner over another in a dating, marital or live-in relationship" (1). Abuse can go in many different directions depending on the situation. Some people think that domestic violence is only physical and hitting or beating your partner up is the only thing involved. Amy James talks about all types of physical harm. James points out that, "Violence can take many forms, including physical violence, molestation, threats, controlling behavior, depriving the partner of food or money, etc." (1). The article by James tells us that some people think there is only one type of physical harm. An abuser will do absolutely anything to get their way and exercise control. One of the most damaging types of abuse is financial abuse where the abuser limits the victim’s access to money and a means to take care of themselves on their own. Even if the victim works, the abuser will control all of the money so that if the victim wanted to leave they wouldn’t have the financial means to do so. "Types of Domestic Violence" indicates different forms of abuse which can lead to a bad ending involving someones life."Types of Domestic Violence" points out that,"The abuser's physical attack or aggressive behavior can range from bruising to murder"(1). Depending on different situations one small action or one small word can escalate someone into a rage which could lead to serious harm or death. Domestic violence can have specific victims, such as a spouse or domestic partner, a child, or an elder. Domestic violence can affect men as well as women. Some types of domestic violence are physical, verbal or nonverbal, sexual, stalking or cyberstalking, economic or financial, and spiritual. Domestic violence affects the victim physically often times causing injuries that could lead to hospitalization or death, psychologically involving gaining control over the victim as well, and socially by isolating them from family and friends. When we think of the effects of domestic violence it becomes clear that it not only affects the victim and the family but as in recent years, the violence can spill beyond the walls of the home into the neighborhood and the workplace resulting in what has become more and more common, domestic violence related workplace shootings.
Domestic Violence is a widely recognized issue here in the United States. Though many people are familiar with domestic violence, there are still many facts that people do not understand. Abuse is not just physical, it is mental, emotional, verbal, sexual and financial. Many victims of physical abuse are also fall victim to these abuse tactics as well. An abusive partner often uses verbal, mental, emotional, and financial abuse to break their partner so to speak. It is through this type of abuse the victim often feels as though they are not adequately meeting their partner’s needs.
Domestic violence covers a large array of abuses. Some of the different types of abuse include Physical, Emotional, Verbal, Sexual and Economical. Women suffering abuse usually suffer from all the different types. Often one type of abuse will bleed or lead to another and most abuse cases never start out with something physical. While it is these things, the violence is also considered a pattern of demeanor used to establish power and control over another person with whom an intimate relationship is or has been shared through fear and intimidation (“Domestic Violence Sourcebook” 9). It has many names, including spouse abuse, domestic abuse, domestic assault, battering, partner abuse, marital strife, marital dispute, wife-beating, marital discord, woman abuse, dysfunctional relationship, intimate fighting, mate beating, and so on (2). Donna Shalala, Secretary of Health and Human Accommodations, believes that domestic violence is “terrorism in the home” (2). This type of abuse involves threats, harm, injury, harassment, control, terrorism, or damage to living beings/property (2). It isn't only in relationships with spouses, it also occurs within family, elderly, and children (9).

However, it is too often overlook that domestic violence may not only occur in terms of a man meting out violence against a woman but could also render a man as the victim too. Many times people turn their backs on male victims of domestic violence (Murray, S. & Powell, A. (2007). Due to the focus on violence against women, men lack a proper or even popular framework to fight domestic violence when it occurs that they are victims (Cruz, 1996). There is also a stereotype that only women can be victims of domestic violence. This makes it hard for men to open up and report when they experience violence from a partner (Cruz, 1996).
There are hotlines numbers that you can call that will help you if you are a domestic violence victim or know someone who are. Domestic violence is often overlooked and can cause someone their life when it is overlooked. HelpGuide.org also says that “Domestic violence and abuse are used for one purpose and one purpose only: to gain and maintain total control over you. An abuser doesn’t “play fair.” (Paragraph 2). If you are in a relationship there should be no such thing as control, and the abuser is usually some who is a victim of abuse or grew up around it. They do it to try to gain self-esteem or power, but they don’t understand that hurting others in the process does not show power it shows weakness.

There are many different types of domestic violence. Physical abuse is the most obvious form, but this is not to say that outsiders always recognize it. Generally, physical violence causes bodily harm, using a variety of methods. Slapping, pushing, throwing, hitting, punching, and strangling are only a few methods. An object or weapon may or may not be used. There is not always physical evidence of physical abuse such as bruising, bleeding, scratches, bumps, etc., therefore, absence of physical marks does not necessarily mean physical abuse had not occurred. Physical abuse sometimes escalates to murder (Morris and Biehl 7, Haley 14-17).
Control and emotional manipulation are more commonly used in the beginning of a relationship as the “captain” of the house. The abuser starts to control who their spouse can be friends with, when and how they can spend money, and when they can go to town. If the victim of the relationships does anything without their permissions, he or she is emotionally punished by the abuser by threatening to leave the victim, uses guilt, rage, or criticizes. An abuser feeds off of these two types of abuse. A relationship that starts out like this can grow into something potentially more dangerous for the victim. The last three types of abuse are the more dangerous kinds of abuse. Verbal abuse is harmful to the victim’s confidence and self-esteem. Name calling, cruel jokes, and humiliation in public places are all types of verbal abuse that will bring someone into deep depression. Sexual and physical abuse is harmful to the victim’s health. In a healthy relationship, sex is wanted and meaningful; however, if the spouse is being forced to have sex, use unprotected sex, or not allowed to decide about keeping the baby, than this is a health hazard. When I saw that the writing assignment for this week I can honestly say I did not look forward to sitting down and writing it. Today was an incredibly long, tiring and interesting day shadowing a Domestic Violence Duty Lawyer from the Gold Coast Community Legal Centre. From 8:30 in the morning till 4:30 in the afternoon, we did not stay in the same place for more than 30 minutes at a time. Throughout my day I really came to distinguished the difference between practicing as a Community Legal Centre Lawyer and as a Private Lawyer. Working at the Southport Magistrates Court I began to learn some of the court etiquette and procedures that one day will become my day to day job.
