Domestic or family violence refers to any form of abuse afflicted by someone’s intimate partner, often within the household. I believe it is such a pressing issue in today’s society because it can affect any member of the community, regardless of age, gender, race or background, and therefore impacts the population on a local, domestic and international level. Campaigns such as White Ribbon, Assist a Sister, Futures Without Violence, Women’s Aid and One in Three work to prevent domestic violence, but they alone cannot correct this global epidemic. This is why it is imperative that the community comes together to take action against domestic violence.

Domestic violence is extremely prevalent, with 30 per cent of Australians aged 18-55 having personally experienced domestic violence according to the National Domestic Violence and Workplace Survey (2011). Not only this, it is also associated with a great deal of stereotyping and sexism. For example, the popular opinion that ‘women are victims and men are abusers’, ignores the fact that “one in three victims of current partner violence during the last 12 months (33.3%) and since the age of 15 (33.5%) were male” (ABS Personal Safety Survey, …show more content…

Community events such as family BBQs and school fetes can also be arranged to raise money and awareness. It is crucially important to educate people about domestic violence so that they can recognise victims who are often unable to stand up for themselves and provide support. Unfortunately, the Australian Government’s response of creating the Office for Women (OfW) is ineffective as it neglects male sufferers, who according to the ABS Personal Safety Survey (2012), make up a third of domestic violence
