Domestic Violence is a Global, National, and Regional Criminal Justice Concern

The British Columbia Justice Summit (2013) has stated that the protection of vulnerable persons is one of the paramount priority issues for BC’s criminal justice system. Accordingly, protecting individuals from domestic, family, and/or partner violence continues to be an area of concern in Canada and British Columbia. Indeed, in 2014 alone, there have been 18 documented deaths in British Columbia stemming from domestic and family violence (Meissner, 2014). Furthermore, BC’s domestic violence action plan has been heavily criticized for not being adequately funded — at a modest $5.5 million over three years — and for lacking clearly outlined progress goals (Kines, 2014). Moreover, in a recent global study, it was found that domestic violence results in $9.5 trillion in annual lost economic output while also contributing to more deaths annually than all global civil war conflicts (Hoeffler and Fearon, 2014).

In addition, domestic violence can result in trauma for children who witness spousal violence, experience violent victimization themselves, or are subject to contentious custody battles associated with intimate partner violence.
