Companies have always been trying to find the best ways to secure a loyal customer base. A company that seems to have found the best way to achieve this is the Dollar Shave Club. They know how to best use humor and customer appeal to create a company that speaks well to their target demographic. America loves the idea of time and money savers but, that’s not enough to completely sell us to a product. Clever marketing and funny ads are critical to the success of any product.
Take for example amazon prime. This is a service that, for a yearly fee of $100, gives customers free 2 day shipping. With as many as 50 million subscribers currently using the service for its speedy and cheap delivery of items, it exemplifies an ideal that our culture holds sacred, efficiency (GeekWire). Another prime example of efficiency is NFL Sunday ticket. With this service you can seamlessly watch every NFL game live on just one screen. Why watch just one game when you can watch them all? The title is great for pulling in viewers because of its explicitness, another thing us as Americans seem to value. The actual commercial plays mostly to the viewers’ sense of pathos. Laughter, which this ad is sure to induce, is a sure fire way that a consumer will remain interested throughout the ad. Throughout the course of the commercial the viewers are taken through the Dollar Shave Club warehouse as Michael puts down other razor companies and sarcastically tells the viewer how their life will be dramatically better if they start using his product. If the commercial isn’t enough to sell the customers the product, the Dollar Shave Club offers a service that screams efficiency.
