The internet is available everywhere we go, and our society lives with constant distractions. I agree with this article because I personally get off track when surfing the web. The web is known to make life easier, but we never think about the negative effects it can have on society. The article Does the Internet Make you Smarter or Dumber? Argues the overuse of the web is believed to be massively remodeling our brains, affects our cognitive abilities, and multitasking is no longer effective. Our society has become overly dependent on the web the long-term effect could be deadly.
First of all, neuroscientist Michael Merzenich, explains the web has massive remodeled ours brains. In the year 1970 through 1980 Merzenich conducted an experiment with primate brains which revealed neural circuits quickly change in response to experience. Studies indicated that certain computer tasks, such as, playing video games enhance visual literacy skills. This displayed people can quickly shift their focus among icons and other images on screens. Other Studies indicated that shifts in focus even if performed correctly, result in less attentive and more automatic thinking. I agree with Ms. Greenfield because shifting our focus constantly results in not analyzing a situation correctly which causes taking the easy way out of certain situations. At another experiment conducted at Cornell University, half a class of students was allowed internet connected laptops, while the other half had to keep their laptops closed. The students who used the web during the lecture scored low on tests. Ms. Greenfield like Merzenich both think the use of the web is making our society shallower.
