Girls are being pressured to have the “perfect” image these days more than ever before. The reason behind it is because of all the magazines and models on social media. Women in magazines and on social media should stop being altered because it creates unrealistic expectations for girls, it lowers their self-esteem, and society’s standards adjust to those unrealistic ideas. Going through social media or a simple magazine impacts a girl so much nowadays. Seeing their favorite model with the “perfect” body makes them belief that that’s how they are supposed to look. They create unrealistic expectations that hurts girls physically and mentally. This is all because the magazines emphasize so much how every girl should be thin like most models to be considered pretty. According to ‘Influence of Magazines on College-Age females’ states, “The average American woman is 5’4” and weighs 140 pounds, while the average American model is 5’11” and weighs 117 pounds” because of this there is so much advertisement in magazines about dieting and losing weight as fast as possible. The only thing this does is mess with their personal overall health. This doesn’t only create unrealistic expectations but it also lowers their self-esteem. Social media and magazines should put pictures of models without them being photoshopped. This will make girls see that no one is perfect and it will no longer lower their self esteem. In ‘Positive body confidence: how social media can affect body image’ it states, “For young people who have a tendency towards perfectionism, anxiety, or disordered eating, the (often digitally enhanced) images of skinny girls or women they see online can lead them to equate slimness with happiness” (weiner) this shows how big the effect is on girls that see thin models
