Diversity affects all walks of life and it plays a prominent role in the helping profession such as social work, and in the medical field. In working within the helping profession one needs to understand the concept of diversity and the impact that it has on communities that differ from that of your own. The definition according to Merriam Webster is the condition of being composed of other differing elements such as race, culture, and other ethnicities. Diversity together with both compassion and humanity forms a balance, one cannot endure one without the other. Diversity has everything to do with culture, it generates different mindsets, but it doesn’t take away the care that one may sustain to help a person of ethnicity.

Essentially, the benefit of diversity in the workplace can offset discrimination and social injustice. Another affect of diversity in the working profession for both the staff and clients is the promotion of a safe and friendly environment. This also helps improve the effectiveness of a worker, the worker will be able to make fair and sound decisions based solely on the customers dilemma or situation.
The one challenge that can affect the workplace regarding diversity is language. Language dissimilarities can cause great barriers leading to frustration and confusion to the client and employee. People who speak another language other than English especially on the customer’s behalf may result in a considerable amount of feeling helpless. This is a primary reason why understanding and learning the magnitude of diversity is of great importance.
