Diversity, is understood as the, “differences in the underlying attributes or non-observable differences” a term that has been utilized more and become commonplace (Pynes, 1997). However, this was not always the case. Shockingly it is still not fully applied in the workplace and this lack of respect for all individuals has led to both physical and emotional traumas to its victims. At times to fulfill the diversity quota a company will higher minorities in order to show they are attempting to have a more culture workplace. This can have its benefits but at a cost. A company should not only be focused on only filling a quota but on the criteria of the person being and how they can help the future of the company.

The workplace doesn’t need to be so millenarian in structure. For this might cause the workforce to feel pressured and stressed. However, just completing these steps does not assure a workplace to be effective for diversity. It requires management and managers to remind and constantly inform its employees about workplace behavior. This can be accomplished by having several diversity and ethical training courses a year to help employees and management. In addition, how they can report harassment or other unethical actions if observed. Unfortunately, there will be a bad apple from time to time that will affect this goal. But by having others notice the wrongdoing being committed and taking the initiative to report it can help create a safer, more understanding work environment (Pynes, 1997). Diversity is a very touchy subject and in the news the role of diversity is being a big concern specifically with police brutality and the “black lives matter campaign” which is a problem. However, we need to make it an “all lives matter campaign” because without collectively working on it together how can we succeed. Furthermore, diversity is the collective association of different cultures and genders working together and utilizing everyone’s creative skills. Being able to share all these traits can help a company thrive and grow into a great workplace. Principles and values are what defines an organizations culture. The character of the organization is questioned when shameful events occur. Through these accounts of discrimination and harassment on diversity, the organizations culture is at risk. An update and review on the policies and procedures are vital for this organization. Sometimes employees need a reminder on how they should conduct business and professionalism with fellow workers. To abide by the laws of harassment and discrimination in the workplace, Treton should be in favor of the refresher course.

Diversity can be differences in age, gender, ethnicity, and religion. Having such a diverse workforce can be very challenging. (1) Today’s workforce is very diverse in respect to age. Before, corporate America consisted of workers ranging from twenty one up to late thirties to early forties. Now, we see people in their mid to late fifties going back to work. This trend has both advantages and disadvantages. One advantage of an older employee over a younger employee is his ability to use his years of experience in situations where a younger employee lacks experience. Another advantage for an older employee is his built relationship with existing customers. The disadvantage of an older employee over a younger employee is his inability to quickly adapt to his changing environment. Younger employees are more “hungry” compared to their older counter parts. Their hunger is fired by their goal to quickly move up the corporate ladder.

Diversity is a notion, when applied to the majority of circumstances, can create a positive conclusion. The trick to producing a positive outcome is often how the different aspects are brought together. Consider a classic dinner combination peas and carrots, the two colors look appealing and the two flavors comes together as one making a superb side dish. Now consider oil and water, these two substance are not often considered a good combination. Although, this is not always the case; olive oil and vinegar (which is water based) when mixed, come together into a delectable salad dressing. Diversity and inclusion should also apply to humans by bringing people together who are different it can creates a whole that is enhanced by the uniqueness of each individual.
Schein in his book “Organizational Culture and Leadership” explains how different believes and behaviors start to be logical when we understand their cultures by stating “When we learn to see the world through cultural lenses, all kinds of things begin to make sense that initially were mysterious, frustrating, or seemingly stupid” (2010, p. 13). This kind of foresight should be the starting point in order to manage the tremendously growing diversity in the workforce nowadays. Leaders and administrators of both public and private organizations through their influence are responsible to promote and manage diversity in an ethical manner.
A basic problem regarding the implementation of diversity into the workplace is that its approach sometimes does not fit the interpretations of equity and equality according to the context in which it was meant.
For the purpose of this paper, I will define what the term Diversity means, and then I will concentrate on the diversity as a result of geographic origin or ethnic diversity. Employers must communicate the effects of diversity in the workplace to ensure that the employees understand and embrace the climate. The most common practice to unleash diversity is through continuous training and mentoring. A continuous learning environment promotes understanding, improvement, and develops interpersonal skills. Employees must understand that diversity is an organizational attribute and not just a policy. When that understanding is achieved, the organization’s workforce is united and has a better chance of success in their mission.
