When considering the major issues and trends in education today, the topic of “inclusion” and “diversity” appear to be at the forefront. Inclusion is a philosophical belief that all individuals regardless of disability should be included in all aspects of society. Another educational issue of importance is diversity in ethnicity, races, language and social classes among our students.
The controversy that surrounds the issue of “inclusion” is created by the interpretation and emotions connected to the concept. Inclusion was never intended to be as simple as placing all students with disabilities in the general education setting. Decision-making should be based on the goals developed and how the instruction to meet the goals would be best implemented. The ultimate key to successful implementation of inclusion appears to be based on the effective collaboration between special and general educators. The very nature of teaching is marked by isolation. Therefore, the process of working with others can be a challenging and demanding task. In order for inclusion to be successful, “all parties must actively participate or have the opportunity to participate in the planning or implementation of a task”. A structure of interdependence and problem solving must occur between teachers and support staff. We must educate the student through a multidisciplinary approach to learning/teaching.
Another issue that must be addressed in education today is diversity. We must make a commitment to incorporate diversity issues into the classroom rather than as an additive approach to existing programs and curriculum.
