While we may think mistakes are fine when it comes to academic situations, youth sports are the complete opposite. In youth sports, little mistakes can become a big deal with parents and peers pointing it out over and over, and kids just simply stress out on it. Also, its not only that but all the time that they spend on these youth sports. Thus, I come to argue that kids should not compete in competitive sports due to all the diversions that these sports cause. One of the many diversions caused by competitive sports could be, all the time and money spent towards youth sports. Self-esteem is tied to sport performance. Who your child is as a person shouldn’t be tied closely to the ability to hit home runs or score touchdowns. If it is, that’s a guaranteed set-up for feelings of failure and low self-esteem. Most young athletes feel great when they win, but it’s how they handle loss that defines their long-term character. Remind your sporty kid that she’s always a winner in your book, even if she loses (Lindholm). Also, even the coaches play a huge role in emotionally scarring kids. There are more wonderful coaches than those who do damage, but it would be naïve to expect all coaches to have your child’s psychological interests at heart. Too often, a win-at-all-costs mentality devastates young athletes. Be on the lookout for behaviors that humiliate your child. Does the coach rant and rave at games? Call out and embarrass players? The best coaches inspire through positive reinforcement and role modeling, not harassment and bullying(Lindholm).

And even though there are many diversions youth sports can cause, there are some advantages to youth sports. For example, youth sports can teach students about teamwork and how and when to use it. Also, when to and when not to take responsibility in certain situations. Also, helps build self-esteem, self-confidence, and discipline. However, kids may be able to learn all these qualities by simply participating in non-competitive sports leagues, like recreational sports, or doing other things like community
