Distracting Cell Phones in Classrooms The sun shined in on the students faces through the windows above the left wall as their eyes were glued to the projection screen, following their instructors pointer line to line on the screen. It was the last slide of the power point when suddenly the students’ phones seemed to plea for attention all at once. It was a Maricopa weather alert, warning all smart phone users of the possible dust storm. Students seem to grab their phones for any and every reason; unknowingly jeopardizing their grades. Cell phones cause a major distraction for students in class; however, this problem could be solved by confiscating the phones. When students reply to texts or check social media, what’s going on in class gets ignored and students begin to fall behind. Additionally, the noise of someone’s phone going off not only distracts that person, but also his/her peers. As stated in one article, “Ringing cell phones can disrupt classes and distract students who should be paying attention to their lessons at hand” (“Cell”). The chaos caused by a phone may not only distract the owner of the phone, but the entire class. On the same note, the aftermath of being distracted by cell phones is clearly visible in the students’ overall performance. Due to attending phones, students often have a hard time keeping up with what is going on in class. Author, Greg Graham claims that, “We’re no longer suffering from an information deficit; we’re suffering from an attention deficit” (Graham). In his article, Graham states that the issue is not about not having inadequate information; however, the issue is with students failing to learn and apply that information.
